Bay Hill Club & Lodge

My 2014 PGA trip took me to Arnold Palmer's Bay Hill Club & Lodge, home of the Arnold Palmer Invitational. The game's biggest stars play here every year, with Tiger Woods winning eight times (as of 2014). We penciled this course in as a back-up trip due to the close proximity to Tampa.

In 2012 it was ranked 33 of 52 by PGA tour players' "most liked courses on tour." So I guess you could call it "below average" in the eyes of the pros. I'd have to agree with that assessment. While I enjoyed our weekend there, the course was pretty underwhelming.

We're a little underwhelming too.

That being said, the last three holes are amazing. Eighteen is also elevated in stature after having watched Tiger Woods win so many times with long putts on the final green. There's also the par-5 sixth hole that wraps around a huge lake... where John Daly scored an 18 in 1998. And the greens were some of the best I've ever played on. Quick, super smooth, yet soft enough to hold a long iron.

Unfortunately, the rest of the layout looks stale... and it is... having been constructed in 1966. In order to play the course you need to stay at the lodge, which is more of a shrine to Arnold Palmer. It's quite affordable compared to other PGA courses (just make sure Darren doesn't order $16 glasses of wine).

Approach into the 13th green.

Since Bay Hill is basically in our backyard, I'd recommend playing it once in your life. But if you're looking for a more memorable PGA experience... travel further out to find it.
