Southern Hills - Saturday
Anyone want to play Southern Hills on Saturday? Gary is going to book a tee time (or two) in the morning.

Hangover Invitational - Spring 2019
Do you remember where you were, when JW got his 2nd win in league history? Snapping a streak of 61 consecutive tournaments without a victory. That might not ever be broken, but it appears the highest current streak is Tall Mike with 34.
It was great to witness JW's round, as he really didn't do anything special... just managed the course and limited the blow-ups. He made nothing worse that double-bogey, which should always be the goal for people with 20+ handicaps. Honestly, he can win every week with that game-plan until his handicap drops to around 15.
His win comes 5 years and 1 day since his only other victory, also at the Hangover Invitational (RIP Quail Hollow).
We now have a log jam at the top, and what could be the closest finish in league history (Katie beat John by 114.2 in her rookie season). With two events remaining, seven people are officially eliminated from contention, and a few more are technically eliminated thanks to their RSVP schedule and playing requirements for the DPT Masters (you need 4 events to qualify).
Fun time after the round with all the pitchers purchased. We were going to pour out an entire pitcher in honor of John's dead golf game... but he opted to drop a mixed drink on the floor instead. All damages were placed on Casey's account.
--------------------
The Jamaican Open is this week at Scepter Golf Club, a course we've played a couple of times (once in a two-man scramble).
A handful of hippies have tickets to the Gasparilla Music Festival (not an officially recognized Club holiday) and "want/need" to play early. I've reluctantly agreed to a time that might allow them to attend both events.
This brings back up the "early vs. late" tee time debate, which many of you people live on the wrong side of delusion. I do keep documentation of each members' boisterous claims, just so I can throw it back in your face when you flip-flop as soon as it suits you.
First tee time is 8:38am. Considering the range is nowhere near the course, you'll need to wake before the sun rises if you want to warm up. After the round, all you people who desire early tee times can piss the day away on your couch, knowing that you could accomplish some weekend chores, despite the fact that you're not going to.
Rate is $50 and range balls are free assuming you get down there early enough to hit them. Also keep in mind that if you miss your tee time you'll be DQ'd. This happened to Tall Mike at the Hangover one year, when he showed up on the 3rd hole after over-sleeping.
If you are a "maybe" on the RSVP list, I'm going to give you one day to figure out your shit before I assume you're OUT and reduce the tee times.
More info to come later.
--------------------
The Rapture this year will almost definitely be played on August 16th-18th. I'm working out the details and searching for some houses... but we'll also probably just be taking 12 people due to all the new babies recently born/expected. So go put this on your calendar NOW.
Later this week I'll post the official RSVP list so we have an idea how many potential attendees we have.

DPT Golf Club Drinks
Are we still calling ourselves that? Anyway, since literally zero of you people were going to come up with a Club Drink... my wife thought it would be fun to create three of them based on a few of our most entertaining nonsense.
Two are based on actual drinks. One is completely made up. In any case, I’m not testing these out. Cause I only drink Bud Heavy. But feel free to give feedback in the comments. Even if it’s your ever elusive praise.

UPDATED Hangover Bar Location- GenX Tavern in Downtown Tpa
Hoping by posting some additional info and pics that might entice more of you to clear your schedule/cancel your other plan/ hire a babysitter / etc. and come join us on Saturday...
The bar is fully stocked but their POS System isn't up yet so they offered to just charge $4 for 16 oz draft beers (domestic/import/craft), $6 for well drinks, and $8 for signature drinks. They are also want us to come up with some kind of creative drink/shot for our golf league as well and who knows, maybe it'll make the menu!
See below for pics of my err my subcontractors' hard work, and update your RSVP!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Come be a "VIP" as the owners of the 90's themed bar I'm building have agreed to host our golf league get together even though they won't be opening to the public until next month.
They will have a bartender (or two) there to serve us and they'll set up an area for us to get some pizzas delivered from Tampa Pizza Company.
I told them we should have around 20-25ppl attend and they'll have their bartender there from 8pm-midnight. For you late-owls who want to truly properly experience the hangover event, there's a few other bars (Pint n Brew / Hotel Bar) that are open till 3am and are right next door.
So feel free to bring your WAG's as well as other friends that will be respectful of the place.
They'll have all the old school arcade games up and running so maybe we'll get a tournament bracket going or something.
Address is 103 E Jackson Street and it's located across from the Bank of America Plaza Building next to the Tropical Smoothie Cafe and European Wax center.
Should be a fun time.

Strokes Lost +5
Now that we're two-thirds of the way through the season, let's look at who is losing the most strokes with the new +5 max rule.
The genesis of the rule change was the Board's hypothesis that higher handicapped players were unfairly getting an advantage, especially on par 3s. Since any max score is a benefit to ALL players, one can easily rationalize that high handicaps hit the max more often, and thus receive that benefit often.
Without any data to prove this hypothesis (it's impossible to tell what previous max scores were natural or not, let alone what those unnatural scores would have been), the Board settled on changing the max score to +5 for all holes. At least one member wanted NO maximum, but conceded that wouldn't work unless we kicked out over half the league.
Personally, I didn't need any data to prove this was a good rule change. I only needed to listen to the cries of our resident "canary in the coal mine" (Gorecki) to know this was a needed adjustment. In particular was the objection that "this would only hurt higher handicappers!"
Yep. That's the entire point. #playbetter
Six weeks in, what does the data show? We can now count how many extra strokes each person has received per round, that they would not have received in the old system: 7s and 8s on par 3s, 9s on par 4s.
The median Index of those losing more than half a stroke per round: 21.6. The median Index of those losing less than half a stroke per round: 13.1.
Should we expect to see handicaps increase for those at the top of the list, thus giving them more strokes overall? Not necessarily. The Equitable Stroke Control portion of the handicap formula prevents this from happening (quickly). In all tournaments, no matter your handicap, terrible blow-ups should remove you from the winner's circle.
So keep the ball in play and strengthen your course management!

Hangover Invitational - Countryside Scorecard
Everyone needs to let me know well in advance what tees you're playing. We got a leader board to set up and spreadsheets to make. For the most part, many of you have accepted your fate of being a terrible golfer, and embraced the cries of Barney Adams to tee it forward.
Because Dan has decided to come back around and give me more work to do... here's a pic of the Countryside scorecard.
Everyone is on the WHITE tees unless you tell me otherwise. To figure out how many extra strokes you get moving back, use the handicap calculator on the member's page, and be sure to add the difference in the ratings (which you can see on the event page).
Let me know!

DPT Championship - Spring 2019 Recap
Another Major in the books, and Darren picks up his league-leading 8th... placing him directly in the Sandbagging Hall of Fame.
In all honesty, the guy just made every putt he looked at, and kept the ball on the course until the final stretch of holes. While he barely missed buying a "good" pitcher, he grinded his ass off making a par (with a 15+ foot putt) on the incredibly difficult 18th hole.
Nobody else was close, but JW snunk into solo 2nd, earning him some much needed World Rankings Points.
Grasslands was really good, and I'm sure will go down as one of our Club's favorite courses in the area. The BGR will probably be a little harsh, which is totally deserved. Regardless, good day at a good spot.
-----------------------------
The Hangover is this week at Countryside (Lake to Pine). We're still waiting for Gorecki to give us the final word if we're going to be at the new bar he's building downtown... and if not we'll just default to our unofficial Club bar. More on this later, but if you're around Saturday night then make a point to show up and bring your family.
Tee time on Sunday is 9am, and we'll be dropping down to 4 groups. Stay tuned for more Hangover details.

DPT Championship - Spring 2019 Preview
Heading to Grasslands in Lakeland, playing a private club on vouchers Big John was able to pre-buy. Two people have yet to pay the $42 (Geoff and Brendan), but I see Brendan is now a "maybe."
If you're bailing, let us know ASAP so we can cancel a tee time if needed.
Get to the course early so we can check everyone in and you can warm up. First tee time is 9:12am.
---------------
Next week we'll be at Countryside (Casey's house). And for the Jamaican we are looking at a few places, none of which currently rhyme with Rebble Peek.
See you Sunday.

Boozer's Golf Review Vol. 14 - Bloomingdale Golfers Club
Reviewing Bloomingdale Golfers Club brings back memories of more carefree college nights in Gainesville bars. Booze plays a very important role in both. Bloomingdale's rough exterior requires beer goggles to fully enjoy a round. In fact, in order to truly "enjoy" Bloomingdale, we recommend at least attempting a beer per hole. You might drink enough to think you're playing Waterlefe, but even if you fail, passing out early might be better than closing the deal and waking up with a 3 in your bed or a +29 net on your scorecard. With that in mind, we expected Bloomingdale to have a great BGR rating. Spoiler alert: it didn't.
You can't drink all day if you don't start early
Bloomingdale aced this portion of the exam. When a burgeoning Booze Golfer asked if they would serve before 11 AM on Sunday, the bartender was indifferent, which is better than a flat denial. A wink and a nod with a coy smile is preferred when skirting local ordinances, but giving beer in exchange for cash is the important part here. Is it because it's semi-private? Perhaps, but either way bravo to your bravado, Bloomingdale.
On-course service
The cart girl was out early and often, but there was something amiss about the service itself. She either didn't notice or didn't care when groups needed booze, choosing instead to drive right on by. Later seen napping in the bar, perhaps she was just having an off day, something with which all Booze Golfers can empathize. That said, we have to rate what we see, and we were generally disappointed. Maybe it was a slow day so she was discouraged, or maybe the local Mormon church had a 7 AM shotgun start that made her arrive early. Either way, it isn't tough to push booze on a golf course, and she made it look like as painful as watching Gorecki line up a putt. At $21.50 for a domestic 6-pack, it's priced higher than you'd think for this level of golf course, and on top of it all she ran out of Budweisers.
Clubhouse Experience
Whereas last week we were told the clubhouse was a great place to take your significant other, we would advise against that this week. That is, unless she's a huge fan of a medium cheese pizza, 10 boneless wings, 6 garlic knots, and a domestic pitcher. The combo itself isn't so bad, but why call it the Valentine's Combo?

| BGC masters the art of romance. |
Prices were high in the clubhouse as well. $15 for a domestic pitcher is way higher than it should be. At least one league member protested by remaining on the deadbeat list for at least 2 more weeks rather than shelling out for overpriced draft beer. We guess these prices are what it takes to support the Chili's stools and unfinished outside patio* area. Oh, and the bartender sometimes disappears so if you want a refill you'll need to time it right.

Shot of the week
![]() |
| An Irishman and Big John walk into a bar... |
A BGR founder was hopeful to take part in the shot of the week with fellow BGR founder Big John, but the lengthy absence of a bartender at exit time forced a substitute. It was later reported that Big John was able to spread the Gospel of the BGR with Irish Dave when they checked out the Crown Apple at $8.75 a piece. Beating a dead horse here, but that's too expensive. We have to assume the Apple and Dave were selected jointly as Dave stands as the most decorated apple-booze aficionado in our club.
Overall
What started off with some promise ended with a thud. Prices are too high, inside clubhouse isn't nice enough, not enough food options for booze base, and poor cart service combine to give Bloomingdale 2 cold beers out of the 6 pack. We were going with 3, but writing this and looking back on it made us angrier and now it's 2. Tough luck, Bloomingdale.
*The patio area was actually pretty nice and we probably should have hung out there instead of the dreary indoor area of the clubhouse.

Match Play - Spring 2019 Recap
Bloomingdale is a brutal grind, that never lets up from the opening tee-shot through the final approach. A handful of guys were under par early, only to eventually eject on the back nine.
Danny in particular, was 6-under-par (net) after 10 holes... and finished +12. JW was bucking his head, threatening to end his winless drought, and then shot +10 (gross) on a four hole stretch starting on the ninth. Big John set a record with +29 net, one stroke away from our first ever TRIPLE PITCHER.
When the dust settled, even par was all you needed to win. Reid's 39 on the back was impressive to watch, earning him back-to-back victories on Tour. He now controls his own destiny with a very large lead in the DPT Cup standings.
While many people have been mathematically eligible to win a season late in the schedule, only two guys — Reid and Dave — have had it ripped from their hands in the final event. It'll be interesting to see if Reid can hang on.
-------------------------
We're off this week, and play next at Grasslands in Lakeland on the 24th. The following people owe John $42:
JW, Geoff, Brendan, Ben.
Pay the man his money.
We have two guests that will make the pairings go out in a slightly different order. However we are still grouped in order of standings, matching up players and throwing in the guests where applicable. #playbetter or #playworse perhaps.

Boozer's Golf Review Vol. 13 – Countryway Golf Club
Oh Boy, Oh Boy, Oh Boy
was I excited for this BGR Review!!! I have always felt Countryway gets a bad rap
but if you just put on your beer goggles I think you might find she is the
prettiest girl in the room. We had a
great showing with 18 DPT members, maybe because there were at least 6 pitchers
to be purchased going into the day and a high probability for more to be added
by the end of the day. Our tournament host started the day off by providing every
group with a pack of Reef Donkey Pale Ale’s. One of our BGR members also
provided a Mimosa Bar that went quickly. Things were off to a great start!
In the end, one BGR
member continued his streak of owing a pitcher for poor performance and is now
4 for 4 on the season and Casey “Have you seen my golf ball” Rease also added
more to the pitcher purchases.
This was one of the
pitcher purchases and was brought out onto the course. A selfish strategy that
I think needs to be looked into unless you are in my group. (Thanks Ben!)
The Memorial Champ was
seen drinking from the cup in the clubhouse. Congrats Reid! Also great form! Elbow
at 90 degrees and then letting the shoulders and head do the work from there,
perfect!
You can’t drink all day
if you don’t start early
I was in the first group
out at 9am and came to the turn at 10:31am. How do I know such an exact time? Because
when I made my order for one of their famous whiskies w/ a splash of coke, I was
told, “In 29 minutes you can”. Bad news and a smart ass tone! I could have immediately
snapped back but instead I took the high road by walking out to my papoose,
grabbing another Bud Heavy, drinking it in the window for her to see, and then
pointing to the watch I wasn’t wearing.
Boozer Cruiser?
No Hooch Mobile at
Countryway. This has become a standard for BGR ratings and I might make the
argument that it doesn’t make sense to have one on a par 3 course but I’m not
going to. Let’s move on…
Club House Love
This is where Countryway
gets all of my love! I am so impressed with their pricing that it has become me
and my wife’s date night spot! Can I get a bacon cheese burger, add fries, and a
whiskey and coke? “That will be $10, sir”. What?? They also sell stamps for 32₵ still, it’s great! So something unbelievable happened on this
visit that was new. We bombarded them so much that they just kept bringing
burgers, cheese steaks, and sides of fries out. Danny yells, “Just put em down,
we’ll eat em!” It turned into $5 all you can eat. A pitcher of Bud Heavy is $6.
Don’t order doubles here because their single cocktails only come with a splash
of mixer. A Crown with a splash of Pepsi will run you $5.
John’s Side Car of the Week
Cinerators? Fireballs
step brother I suppose. Not sure how this came about or how one gets chosen to
participate, but either way $4 for a shot is pretty solid.
Overall
At the end of the day, I
want to give a 6 beer rating because if Countryway doesn’t get a perfect rating,
I feel we are chasing unicorns here. I guess I will keep looking for that
unicorn.
Side Note: Coach
Bombay said Brendan can’t play this weekend
Week 6 Reminder
If you’re playing in Week 6... and you haven’t paid John $42... do that now.
He prepaid the discounted rounds for us and I’m hearing many of you are slacking.
John... name names of who owes.

The Memorial - Spring 2019 Recap
Quick update, as I got too much going on today.
Lots of people bouncing around the top of the leader board yesterday, until Reid birdied 3 of 4 holes near the end to pull away from the field.
Tall Mike was able to birdie 16 to get solo 2nd. Everyone else ranged from "decent" to "awful."
Buchert had an eagle. Brendan had his first legal double-chip of his career. John has now bought a pitcher in every tournament this year.
The course was in Countryway shape... slow fuzzy greens... tight barren fairways in spots... thick wet bunkers. Perfect for this event.
----------------------------
This week is Match Play, 10am at Bloomingdale. We are FULL at the moment, with Tall Mike as the first alternate if Brendan can't play with his injured wrist.
Because of this, I'm not going to officially make the pairings until later in the week when I know who's going to play.
Get your RSVPs updated sooner.
Also... a bunch of you had scorecard issues yesterday. Get it together. It's 4 scores per hole. Put the correct score next to the correct name. If you find you've gone 3+ holes without writing scores down... walk off the course and go home.

2019 Official Memorial Tournament Announcements
Hello DPT Memorial Participants.
We'll assume the rumors are true that people were SO upset with me abandoning the tee box announcements last Memorial Tournament that I've been reassigned to last group going out. Thanks in advance to Irish Dave "falling on the sword" and being ok with this. If only Tampa Bay Brewing Company brewed ciders I'd have a case for you in our cart come Sunday.
So last memorial tournament I announced the pairings on the blog "Ivor Robson Style" which received luke warm reviews and members suggested it would be way more entertaining if I abandon any form of golf etiquette and instead dish out some hate. So given the democratic state of this league the people have spoken. So I now present you with SUNday SUNDay SUNDAY's (Pre)Announcement of Pairings complete with some Gorechate:
"Lads and Lassie, Welcome to the 2019 Semi-Annual Memorial Tournament!"
Starting Tee Position A we have:
Danny "I've broken 100 twice and this includes a 99 here at Countryway" MacLean
Brendan "Hold my newborn, I have a (now legal) double chip to take" Donoghue
Darren "Who has smokes, pills, and/or alcohol they can spare?" Broom
and Chandler "I'll accuse others of sandbagging so hopefully they won't notice my 2 stroke increase (18 percent) in just one months time" Brown
In Tee Position B we have:
Brian "My wife believes this is a men's only league" Buchert
Robert err Reideo "I arrive late and leave early cause I gotta beat the traffic" Reid
Casey "I moved North but my recent play is going South" Rease
and Robbie "Call me Gumby now with this new spine" Wilson
In Tee Position C we have:
Geoff "My entire wardrobe is Sell My Home Tampa shirts in size smedium" Leighly
Adam "Gasparilla is over when I say its over!" Lynch
Mike "Anyone wanna hear my shot by shot replay of my round? No? I'll tell you anyways" Hauch
and Chris "I'd rather streak naked than buy off-brand clothes on a clearance rack" Fazioli
Teeing off in Position D we have:
Gary "When can I start asking for the Handicap Flag for my cart cause of my poor vision?" Brown
Mike "I stand over my ball so long I play at the same pace as a foursome" Oostenbrink
Katie "Why haven't their been billboards put up yet announcing that I have a boyfriend?" Austin
And John "I've lost LB's but I've also lost my golf game" Webermeier
And in the Final Position E we have Dave "I went to India in search of enlightenment and am immediately tested with this pairing?!" Harrington
and finally Mike "All these jokes of others hopefully deflect from what my golf game really is" Gorecki
Well there you have have it. Looking forward to another successful tournament. Be sure to come see me for your "liquid courage" before your round commences! GorecHate Out!
