Hangover Invitational - 2019 Summer Preview

Saturday night we'll begin at Irish 31 in Westchase at 8pm. Eventually we'll head over to Repeal 18.

Come hang out and bring your WAGs or friends. This is our season party. Based on your gross scoring averages (70% of you cant break 90), it would be really depressing to think you're only in the Club for the golf. Not to mention — The Hangover helps satisfy the USGA's "Group Cohesion/Activities" requirement.

So... come hang out.

------------------------------

World Woods (Pine Barrens) on Sunday at 10:30am. Just like when we played the Rapture up there in 2015, the base tees will be set on the WHITES. It's short, but it's difficult. Keep in mind it's a par 71, so add 150-175 to the total distance on the card to get an adjusted number.

If you want to move back, let me know ASAP.

Handicaps and pairings will be posted shortly. They might change slightly if/when Tall Mike figures out his life. Group rate is allegedly $30, and it's booked under "Gorecki." Range balls NOT included. Don't let them over-charge you, and if you have any issues be sure to yell at Mike.

------------------------------

Speaking of... WAY too many "???s" for Match Play (Week 5). I consider those OUT, so when I call to book the round I'd only be reserving 12 spots at the moment. Match Play is a difficult week to play since it works best if we have exactly a multiple of 4.

Update your RSVPs!

Hangover Invitational - Booked

Last week at Southern Dunes, Brendan was thinking about how nice the course was, and came to a realization based on the $70 greens-fee.

“We are about to play a bunch of dumps, right?” he asked.

Yes. I was going to take you all to a cheaper course for the Hangover. I’m not sure if Gorecki could feel the winds of value on the Timber Greens... but he took it upon himself to call World Woods.

They’re getting 20 of us on Pine Barrens at 10:30am for $30. Range balls not included.

We’ve never played PB in regular league Stroke Play.

See you up there.

Boozer's Golf Review Vol. 19 - Southern Dunes Golf and Country Club

As we approach a celebrated boozing golf weekend around the country, it is my honor to review Southern Dunes for you, our loyal readers. I hope you're all preparing your bags with your liquor of choice, scouting beverage carts, and finding fun 19th holes in preparation for Memorial Day weekend. If you're lucky enough to get a tee time at Carrollwood Country Club or Countryside, you can rest assured of a great booze and golf day. If you're stuck going to Countryway, at least you'll have a great booze day. On to the review!

You can't drink all day if you don't start in the morning

What question do we always ask when we are checking in for a round? That's right, it's "is the cart girl out today?" It was answered with a presupposing laugh and an "of course, but you can go ahead and stock up now in the bar." First tee time was at 9 AM on a Sunday. The day was off to a solid start.

Thrifty boozing conditions

Brendan the Bold is always ready to test the limits of thrifty boozing with the conspicuous papoose, and there wasn't a batted eye when we rolled around the pro shop and the starter with a mobile mimosa bar. This reviewer has taken to adding some ultra light beers that will go unnamed (holding out hope for sponsorships in the future) to the bag as well as the emergency bag bourbon (sometimes just whiskey). Those served well on the course with some ice time in the papoose. Although the bag drop attendants might sometimes make a thrifty boozer wary, fortune often favors the bold in the boozing golf world.

On course service

The cart girl was willing and able to fill the coolers on the carts with her assortment of 12 oz cans of domestic beers. That said, I don't think Southern Dunes understands that 6-pack specials mean giving the 6th beer at a discount as they charged a somewhat steep $25. She also had the typical airplane bottle selection for $15 for a double. Unless you have Regular-sized John money living the single and childless lifestyle, we'd recommend at least starting with some of your own prepurchased supply. Also of note, the inventory was a little light having only 3 airplane bottles of Jack Daniel's at hole 15. Isn't a reload in order when going from 1 to 18? Also, our group only saw her when she was posted up on 7 and as she was moving towards us on 15. That doesn't show much hustle. Credit cards were processed at the cart which is a nice bonus for a boozer who sometimes forgets to go back to the clubhouse to close out a tab.

Pissability

Hope you're not too hydrated out there because despite being a somewhat open golf course, houses encroached everywhere. House-lined courses are not only bad for golf, they're bad for pissing, too. Sporadic trees could shield in times of desperation, but the community's proclivity for screened enclosure hanging out might get you a criminal charge. There were a few bathroom stops along the way, but if you have to go on the wrong hole the pee-pee jitters might cost you a stroke or two. Be extra aware.

Clubhouse experience

The breakfast buffet looked fantastic as we walked through the clubhouse in the morning. Omelet bar, grits, bacon, eggs, and biscuits and gravy looked and smelled delicious. If you can get there early while feeling a little worse for wear, this and an early Bloody Mary might hold your cure. The late lunch crowd must have left our servers a bit busy, as it was pretty slow by the time the last group got in from the round. The clubhouse was solid but not spectacular as we were recommended the Cuban sandwich that might have come from 7-11. Prices in the clubhouse were lower than on the course. This is wholly unacceptable to the BGR. We also boycott tiered pricing gas stations that charge more for credit card transactions. The biggest saving grace was the deadbeat list and Casey's double pitcher performance. Had it not been for an abundance of beer, the BGR wouldn't have stuck around for long.

Overall

This was an ok boozing experience, and as we continue to hone our booze golfing craft we learn about the little thing, although sometimes difficult to identify or express, that make a course special for boozing. Unfortunately, Southern Dunes just didn't have enough of them. Early booze, on course service, cart coolers, and a decent clubhouse experience can be dragged down quickly by high prices and low pissability. This was like a free, almost cold Bud Light: you're not going to complain about it, but you'd rather have many other things. Three cold beers out of six.

DPT Open - Summer 2019 Recap

Great day out on Southern Dunes, a "new" course for our league. I'm pretty sure everyone enjoyed it and wanted to play it again. Even Casey — who showed up sick, had Gary talking in his back swing, and got a lethal dose of Gorecki Golf Cancer in his cart. RIP, Casey's golf swing. You've seen what GGC did to John, and the road to recovery is dark and full of terrors.

Speaking of John, we have a "worst-to-first" situation, as he won* an event out of nowhere after buying 11 pitchers in his past 10 tournaments. Is he back? Or was Southern Dunes just a course where you live and die with the putter — the only club that never completely abandoned John?

Gary, who tends to win his events late in the season, tied John after melting down from 130 yards on the final hole. He was also an inch or so away from a hole-in-one on the 6th hole (looked like it was going in the entire time). And he's now on top of a bunched leader board, trying to finally win a DPT Cup.

-------------------------

The course was awesome, with some of the most difficult greens we've ever played. It'll probably have to remain an early-summer location, due to the $130+ rate in the winter. But perhaps we can get an even better deal next time if we bring 20+ people.

We're off this week for Memorial Weekend. Make sure your RSVPs for the hangover are up-to-date. Right now I'd only book 16 people based on current responses. The course has not yet been decided.

As for the Hangover bar, we should probably head up near the Westchase area. If you have any suggestions, feel free to comment and I'll happily shoot them down.

-------------------------

Here are the final 2019 Rapture rankings:

1 - Chandler
2 - Gary

3 - Faz
4 - Reid
5 - JW
6 - Gorecki
7 - Darren
8 - MikeHo
9 - Big John
10 - Adam
11 - Danny
12 - Tall Mike
13 - Robbie
14 - Geoff
15 - Katie

16 - Brendan

ALTERNATES
17 - Dave
18 - Troy

I'm going to take some time researching a 3rd house rental. Once I get that squared away, the top 16 will need to send in their payment. After about a week, if people haven't paid or are not sure they can attend, we'll get Dave and/or Troy the option to take a spot.

If you don't have the dates on your calendar already... then you might as well just let Dave take your spot now. You are unworthy.

Gary and I will draft teams at the end of this season. Maybe even at Pinehurst if we're sitting around and need something to yell about.

Southern Dunes Updated Scorecard

Gorecki went yesterday and played the ladies' tees in the rain. See the updated scorecard below:

If you're moving tees, let me know sooner than later.

DPT Open - Summer 2019 Preview

We're back this week. Sixteen players at 9am, so if your status has change, update your RSVP.

Southern Dunes is a new course to the Club, located out in Haines City just past Lakeland. We have range balls included in our rate so get out there early, as you should always do, to hit some balls.

It's a great course, with fairly wide fairways and hundreds of bunkers. Plays a bit like World Woods.

Everyone is on the WHITE tees unless you tell me otherwise (Dave, on blue). Here's the alleged scorecard.

See you out there.

Update:

Looks like Southern Dunes has added a couple of "combo" tees since I was last out there. The Blue/White combo plays 6,476 (which Dave will now be on instead of Blue) and the White/Gold plays 5,810 (which Gorecki wants to play).

2019 Rapture - First Course Booked

We've got the first course reserved for this year's Rapture:

Friday, August 16th - The Verandah Club (Whispering Oaks).

10:30am Four-Ball... $49 plust tax.

I wanted to play their other course, but it'll be closed for maintenance. Instead, we'll be on the newer Jack Nicklaus course, which is allegedly wide but I'll probably move us back to the longest distance in Rapture history.

Start getting excited! Tell Dave all about how awesome the trip is going to be!

Skins Game - Summer 2019 Recap

Adam got his first career victory yesterday, demolishing the field in what was a pretty difficult day at the usually subdued Buffy Creek. Wind and bumpy greens got the better of most the field. A wall of water drenched us with only a few holes remaining. And as predicted, the base tees weren't playing anywhere close to 6,400.

Adam apparently got the putter working, which paired well on a course with little danger of spraying the ball. While winning the Skins Game usually doesn't equate to a lot of earnings, in his case he win 13 of 18 skins for a tournament high $52. Immediately spending some of that on a "good pitcher" after shooting -10 net.

Eight strokes behind you'll find Gorecki and Buchert. Casey was close to getting solo 2nd but he loves ejecting on the final hole of his rounds.

Brendan was probably the biggest winner, earning $48 from skins and keeping himself on pace to beat out Dave for the final (hypothetical) Rapture spot. Both won't be able to make the standings, but if they both play Week 3 they'll have 9 events and the tie-breaker would be their average points. We'll see... it's getting pretty tense out there knowing we're going to leave someone behind.

-----------------------

Speaking of, updated Rapture standings, as a few people finally made the big board:

1 - Chandler
2 - Gary
3 - Reid
4 - Faz
5 - JW
6 - Gorecki
7 - Darren
8 - MikeHo
9 - Adam
10 - Robbie
11 - Danny
12 - Geoff
13 - Tall Mike
14 - Big John

15 - Katie

Below are those not on the list. I'm including rounds played and avg World Rankings points:

16 - Dave (9 / 85.0)
17 - Brendan (8 / 138.6)
18 - Troy (1 / 7.5)

Everything locks after our next event, which is in two weeks. Enjoy the time off.

Boozer's Golf Review Vol. 18 - Silverthorn Country Club

I know many of you are avid followers of the BGR and rely upon us for hard hitting, up-to-date coverage of all the local courses. We apologize for not covering  University Park Golf and Country Club. I'm not a bitter man, but let's just say:

Now that that is behind us.

Let'd talk about all the things that are simply unacceptable on a golf course. First, while the BGR is a firm believer in "different strokes for different folks" identifying as a Gorecki is something that should not be tolerated. While I understand that the mind may wander into dark places when you are sitting up for the 5th night in a row at 3am trying to calm your infant, no daughter would be proud of seeing his father on top of the leader board sinking to that level. Second and finally:
You could have at least spelled Ho right!!

NO!!!!!

You can't drink all day if you don't start early
I did not attempt to purchase, but based on the fact that the gas station sold the BGR some get hards on the way to the course I assume they were open for business. The conversation in the clubhouse was something along the lines of:

BGR Member: What's the drinking situation on the course...is the cart girl going to be out there?
Golf Pro: I haven't seen her yet, but she should be out there.
Other BGR Member: What's the situation with the cart girl? I mean what are we working with?
Golf Pro: I'll let you be the judge of that.

On-course service
Little did he know. She was out on the course, but if we are putting a par on number of times we see the beer lady a round I would suggest that, just like our sport, four is the most commonly acceptable number. She was not really Johnny on the spot in that regards, but her prices were pretty strong at $15 for a sixer.

Clubhouse experience
I don't really feel the need to rehash the old "You Might Have Hep A" experience, but that does not bode well for this rating. I'm inclined to think that the 45 minute wait to ladle some soup into a bowl and drop in front of a 30 year old that is just now having his wisdom teeth taken out (really?) means that they fired everyone and found the only person on this planet with absolutely nothing wrong with them to prepare our food. I will also note that the symptoms of Hep A and Sunday drinking are eerily similar. We highly advise that you get the shot, but will also endorse the just drink through it, you'll be fine approach to life if you're scared of needles.

Pissability
Setting aside the handful of times that a cop has whispered, ever so tenderly, in my ear I could book you for indecent exposure for that, I had my first experience, during an off season round, of actually getting called out for peeing in public. This had my ears up like a meerkat in season, and if you happen to be looking for the ole one two combo of a possibly lethal virus and exploring your more voyeuristic side then you are in luck at Silverthorn.

There's nowhere to hide

Overall
Driving up to Hernando County twice in one week is simply not something most of us are looking to do. Twice for golf I can understand, but once for golf and once to keep away the die slow is just not what anyone signed up for. Based on the course conditions I don't think playing Russian Roulette with a french dip is really worth the second trip. The prices were pretty strong, and I brought the Thursday, Friday, and Saturday hangovers along as my free carry on so wasn't going to play the liquor game yet no correspondents reported anything egregious. I'll start this ranking at 4 ice cold beers and knock it down to 2 vaccine filled hypodermic needles.
You're going to feel a little pinch

Update from Silverthorn

Here's an email I just received from Silverthorn. I know this will be difficult for most of you, since you don't have the ability to "read the blog" — or anything else with more than 140 characters... but here you go:

-------------------

As many of you have seen on the news by now, the restaurant at Silverthorn Country Club recently had an employee test positive for Hepatitis-A. We would like to give everyone some more details on the matter and try to ease some fears.

The employee was a part-time dishwasher that did not handle food and has not been employed here since before Easter. He was not present at the Easter Brunch nor was he here for the Springstead prom.

Once he was diagnosed as testing positive, the health department immediately informed us and did a thorough inspection.  They swabbed all the surfaces of the kitchen and tested all the food.  All tests came back negative for any virus. At that time we were given a clean bill of health to continue business as usual.

Even though those tests were negative, we took the extra step of having the entire restaurant deep cleaned and sanitized, and our current employees were all vaccinated, just to be safe.

While the news reports may sound shocking, we assure you this is just standard procedure: any time the health department gets news of someone testing positive for this sort of virus, they must go through all of these steps and alert the media.  They want everyone to be informed, as do we, so that they can choose to take precautions if they wish. The Hernando County health department office on Forest Oaks Blvd. is open to offer free vaccinations to anyone who may be concerned they were exposed.  Also, for those who live in or near Silverthorn, the Publix on Barclay Avenue has stocked extra doses of the vaccine if anyone wishes to go there. While they do not offer it free of charge, they have the means to work with your insurance company and have on-site clinics for anyone who wants more information.

We do apologize for any inconvenience or stress this news may have caused and appreciate everyone’s support while we work through this.  If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact our manager, Wayne Connelly, at 352-797-6383.  Thank you.

Nice Place You Picked There Commish...

We joked on Sunday there must be something going on with the kitchen staff given how long the food was taking. Well our intuition may have been correct...

So commish go ahead and call the department of health and let us know what we gotta do next. Well besides being on the lookout for dark urine and pale white stools!

Skins Game - Scorecard and Pairings

We randomized parings last year, figuring that at 80% handicap for skins... it's still legit to possibly have Danny grouped with Dave. So — here we go!

Random pairings are up.

Below is the scorecard. Buffy Creek has a very large gap between the white and the gold tees. Everyone is on the whites unless you tell me otherwise. Gorecki has been moved up. Dave has been moved back to the blue tees.

9am tee time. Give yourself plenty of time to get down there.

Rapture Rankings Update

Here's a list of current Rapture standings. Remember, you need 10 events in the last rolling 18 to qualify on the board. Anyone who doesn't qualify, we'll rank in order of:

1) Most rounds played
2) Average World Rankings points per round

Top 12 will be locked after the DPT Open (week 3), and will automatically qualify. After we have our Top 12, we'll explore adding the next 4 people on the list assuming they are IN and ready to immediately pay.

1 - Chandler
2 - Gary
3 - Reid
4 - Faz
5 - Gorecki
6 - JW
7 - Darren
8 - MikeHo
9 - Tall Mike
10 - Robbie
11 - Geoff
12 - Big John
13 - Katie

Below are those not on the list. I'm including rounds played and avg World Rankings points:

14 - Danny (9 / 79.4)
15 - Adam (9 / 41.7)
16 - Brendan (8 / 141.1)
17 - Dave (8 / 81.3)
18 - Troy (1 / 7.5)

Here's what I'm reading into those rankings: assuming people don't have to bail for injury (Reid and Brendan have hand issues) or family conflicts (JW, Tall Mike), then taking 16 shouldn't be an problem.

HOWEVER.... Troy has no chance of making it (obviously, just moved back) and Brendan and Dave are in serious danger. Might be a big hit to the breakfast and potato crowd.

But, that's also the point of the qualification process. Play a bunch, score some points!
