Week 1 Course Information

Random order has been created for Week 1. There are currently three open spots. One of you is bound to bail, at which point I'll cancel a tee time. Bail sooner than later. 

 

Any addition/subtraction of the roster just moves everyone up/down the list.

I have everyone on the WHITE tees for now (6,288).

Here's a scorecard.

If you want to move back to the BLUE tees, make a comment and you'll gain at least 3 strokes. Keep in mind this is a par 71.

We will allow the GOLD tees for the senior/suck people. If you're 55+ in age (I believe we only have two people) or 25+ in Index (also two people) you can play the GOLD tees. Make a comment, and you'll lose at least 2 strokes.

Note:

 

It's been awhile since we played here. Looking at the scorecard, it says the practice range (left of #1) is considered "Ground Under Repair," and you get a free drop if you hit into it. I highly doubt we were aware of that... but now you know.

Summer 2022 - Week 1

We're starting the season off at Fox Hollow - 9am.

Price should be $63ish and they said range balls are included. So be sure not to pay for them.

FBGC Boat Day

As part of our duty to hold social events outside of golf, we're going 'toonin.

Geoff and Gorecki have each reserved a boat — leaving out of Ricks on the River — on Saturday, June 4th. This is the day before our first event of the Summer season.

We have a cap of 16 people, and WAGs are welcome.

Comment if you're joining.

 

Be at Ricks at 1pm and BYOB. The boats are reserved until 7pm.

Summer 2022 Board Meeting

Probably the quickest meeting we've ever had, which should be expected since the Club is basically perfect.

But we implemented a couple of big changes... which I imagine will ruffle some feathers. Here are the minutes:

• We revisited the "no gimmie" rule, as was decided in our previous meeting. It was voted 5-0 to stick with it. We feel some of you people actually play faster without gimmies.
  

• Chandler (hey, that's me!) continued his quest to "fix" the Hangover. His big idea was to payout 100% of the prize pool to those who attend the season party. If you don't show up and win the event, you get the points... but not the money. This received some push-back, but the board ultimately voted 5-0 on a compromise:
• 1) The Hangover entry fee is now $15, raising the season dues to $135. I apologize to the four people who already paid... but you owe another $5.
• 2) $10 of your entry fee will be used as it always has been — a combination of league rake and normal payouts for the top 3 to 4 players in the event, regardless of their Hangover attendance
• 3) The extra $5 of your entry fee will be paid in a 70/30 split to the top two players who physically attend the season party.

• We voted 5-0 to allow the Setup Committee to establish a "forward tee" in certain tournaments. This would only be done on a case-by-case basis, when the Committee deems it acceptable. I'm not sure what we're going to call this tee (please send suggestions) but for now we'll call it the "Senior Suck Tee."
• When this tee is available, you can only choose it if you are 55+ years of age OR possess a Handicap Index greater than or equal to 25.0.
• The goal is to provide a slightly shorter option for our aging members, and to entice anyone lacking physical talent to move up and hopefully lower their Index.

• The Dan Suggestions:
• Rejected (1-4) his suggestion to increase the stoke-and-distance penalty from 2 to 3. John was the only Board Member to vote for it.
• Rejected (0-5) the elimination of unmarked drop zones. Technically they are already eliminated unless the Board states otherwise before a round. And any disagreement about drop areas can be worked out by each group. However, we want to remind everyone:
• If you aren't sure a drop-zone exists you can play a provisional. But you must DECLARE it. If you hit that provisional to 2 feet and then find out there's a marked drop zone, you have to then re-hit from that zone. So make your intentions known before re-teeing.
  
• Rejected (0-5) his idea of a $1 payout every time you 3-putt. While we didn't necessarily hate the premise, this can and should be done as a side bet during tournaments.
• Rejected (0-5) his flag stick suggestion. This really only applies to Gorecki, and his group can sort it out.
• Rejected (0-5) a 3-stroke drop for a lost ball. We already have a rule for this (Playing Rule 8.2).
• Passed a Resolution (5-0) that Dan should read the published rules on this website. At his expense (additional Club Credit) the Board is willing to physically print them and mail them to his last known address.

 

The Chairman quickly adjourned the meeting right as someone mentioned the phrase "voting out."

There are tee times as low as $36 (most $45) for Rogers park this weekend.  I am not against playing late afternoon for only $20.  Easy to get to, low standards for performance, and a convenient convenient store on the way to grab beers.

It allegedly was considered the "most improved course in 2020" by GolfPass/Advisor.

FBGC Masters - Spring 2022 Recap

Last Sunday was the perfect punctuation for our most difficult season ever. Former Member Greg said: "this must be what golf is like in Hell."

What was that course?!

Let's start with the good: It was probably the best overall conditioned course we've played in awhile. Greens were receptive and rolled true (a little slow but I highly doubt they cut them after all that rain). The fairways were over-seeded and not nearly as flooded as we feared. And the rough actually had grass — a rarity this time of year in Florida.

All the par 3s were nice looking. I liked the 9th hole. The green contours were interesting and well done. The weather was great, and the late tee time was appreciated by the Members with social lives! Umm... that's about it.

Tampa Bay G&CC kicks you right in the dick from the opening tee shot. Not quite in the same way as Lake Jovita South or Bloomingdale. Instead, you're asked to either hit a 200 yard shot leaving 180 in to a tiny green... or a 240 yard draw past some houses that will find a lake if it draws too much, or find OB if it doesn't. The second hole was insane - 506 yards with a legit 20-yard wide fairway the entire hole. Lake on the left and OB on the right. 

 

Nobody with any architectural knowledge designed this course... which is probably why I can't find who is credited with this abomination. The white tees didn't look much better. Sure... it's shorter, but the landing areas are the same postage stamps. Everyone metaphorically threw up on themselves out there... perhaps leading to one Member physically throwing up on himself after the round.

Usually you can look at our scorecard and quickly identify a handful of easy holes. I guess that would be the 4th hole — the only par 3 not playing 180+ into a wind. But there's only one non-par-3 where someone didn't make an 8 or higher.

Whatever... this recap needs to keep moving. 

 

Geoff won by making bogey on the last two holes - which is pretty damn impressive. Travis was the only Member to better his score on those holes, and Tony actually parred them both!

As Geoff relaxed on the patio, Troy blew a two-stroke lead with some untimely penalties. He played amazing all day... and might be one of our best approach players at the moment.

Other shit I noticed:

 

- Gorecki was the ONLY person to make par on all the par 3s. It's very likely the first time in his life he's done this.

- Crum had himself quite the day. He is officially the first player to owe 3 pitchers. But his back-nine 70 is still not as bad as Steve P's back-nine 72 in 2012. And that was when our max was double-par! 

- Crum also finished the season with 50 points... which he only earned by tying Chandler's "ghost" in Match Play. Meow-ch.

- Four guys earned points while still owing bad pitchers. That's probably a record.

Course Set-Up on Sunday

Some comments about the tee boxes for Sunday... in reference to Gary asking about the "Blue" tees.

TBG&CC's website shows a scorecard with Black (6,210) and White (5,546) tees. We aren't allowing Whites, based on the distance, Slope, and Bogey Ratings. This is not the Concussion.

But various sources say there is a "Blue" tee (USGA database, Golfshot, etc). I called TBG&CC and asked for info on their two back tees. The assistant pro told repeated to me the Black and White distances. But then someone in the background started yelling:

"Tell him it plays 6,094"

 

I took this to mean the Black tees. Perfect. The course is super tight with lots of water.

 

If there are Blue tees out there - and it makes sense - this one time only I'll allow you to move up before you start your round. You'll lose 2 or 3 strokes doing so.

It's rare we play somewhere I know nothing about. But, as we know, golf courses have terrible management... and their pros aren't very helpful. So we're going blind, and attempting to be nimble.

All the rain should be past us by the time we tee off (11:30am). It'll be wet through.

2022 Rapture Dates

Based on the responses, we have a clear choice for 2022 Rapture:

October 6th - October 9th

We'll play the 7th, 8th and 9th (Friday to Sunday). Check in on Thursday, per usual.

Rankings for the event lock after our 3rd event next season. Hopefully by then I'll have a location booked and we can start collecting payments. Draft night will be later in the year.

Blah blah blah you kids know the deal by now.
