I need to use this space to clarify rules more often... so here is one that came up a couple of tournaments ago.
USGA Rule 14-4
If a player’s club strikes the ball more than once in the course of a stroke, the player must count the stroke and add a penalty stroke, making two strokes in all.
So let's say you're off the green laying two, and about to hit your third shot (a chip with a slightly buried lie in the rough). But you decelerate on it and accidentally hit the ball twice, Gorecki-style.
Wherever your ball ends up, you're now laying FOUR... and hitting your FIFTH shot.
Are we positive that you don't count both hits as a stroke? So you chip for your third, the double-hit is your fourth, add a penalty stroke, and are now putting for six?
ReplyDeleteYes we're positive. Rule 14-4 that I quoted isn't OUR rule. It's from the Rules of Golf as governed by the USGA and R&A.

ReplyDeleteThat is a 2 stroke penalty, and the player must find their original ball and correct the mistake before the next tee. If you don't do it before the next tee you're disqualified. (According to the USGA 15-1).

But then you might hit Bito's ball by mistake.
