So in lieu of a full recap... let's look at the "Winners" and "Losers" of the weekend.

Winner -
Currently has a career-leading 6.5 out of a possible 9 points. Dave drafted a great team, and then made sure to win two of his three contests. He will hopefully be the first keeper of our new trophy, if the league president can ever figure out how to finish it.
Loser - #1 Overall Pick
Hey, that's me! Chandler was drafted because of his stellar match-play (singles) record. He lived up to that hype by earning a rare Orange point with a gross 77. But on day one, he didn't contribute nearly enough to his playing partners. Both Tall Mike and Brendan deserved better!
Winner - Dave's Last "Pick"
Gorecki wasn't drafted by Dave. He was forced upon Dave like a bad arranged marriage in India. And up until last month, the concerns about Gorecki were justified. But he continued his stellar play (in relation to his handicap) and scored 2.5 points while securing the cup-clinching point for the 2nd straight year.
Loser - Chapman Format
An American tradition developed in 1947 by golfer Dick Chapman at Pinehurst. Still used in annual tournaments at the prestigious club, it is also sometimes called "American Foresomes." Dick Chapman, who played a record 19 times at the Masters as an amateur, would never have predicted that his game was too complex for golfers 70 years later.
For the 3rd year in a row, members of the league struggled to grasp the concept. This year, it was Darren, Reid, Gary and Buchert who decided to play a scramble after the 2nd shots. Why? Because a combined 6 years of DPT Ryder Cup experience wasn't enough for someone to realize there is never a scramble component in any of the matches. At one point, someone in that group reportedly said they thought it was scored as stroke play instead of match play.
At first Reid was blamed. Then Gary. Then Darren. And Buchert swears the modified-alternate-shot-scramble disaster was used last year. Considering he played with Darren, Brendan and Tall Mike last year... I believe it.
There will never be a scramble component to this event. You can't accurately handicap it. I originally didn't even want modified alternate shot, but was convinced it wasn't too complicated for you people. Spoiler alert: it is.
Winner - JW's Picks
The Dub accurately predicted the first 6 matches, which included a halve by Gary/Gorecki & Darren/John. And while he only picked 3 of the final 6 correct, he wrote about being 2 Up on Reid through 15 and choking the match away.
Loser - Snapchat Journalism
As a joke it was suggested that we re-create the "Spring Break 2016" golf trip. I'm pretty sure all I accomplished was giving the WAGs a way to watch over us.
Winner - Reunion and Grand Cypress
Excellent course conditions. Accommodations were great. Location was perfect with restaurants and bars close by. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.
Loser - Race Relations and Gender Equality
We definitely set both of these back a few decades for various reasons. And by "we," I'm mostly referring to Gorecki and one or two people who aren't in the league. We'll keep fighting the good fight, however. #progress
Winner - Feeding the Homeless
JW donated pizza to those less fortunate. He's a great role model, and we should all learn from his generosity.

ReplyDeleteJW was definitely the MVP for his generosity. And I will give props to Groecki. I didn't play bad (shot 87), he just kept making bogey after bogey and I couldn't keep up. Now get that damn handicap down!

ReplyDeleteHighlights I took from the weekend (in no particular order):
- Some of us learning of a super secret 11th floor bar in the resort. Over hyped (BOTH bar tenders on vacation and music guy just wandered around instead of playing) but we ended up closing it down at 11pm. Only to walk out of the elevators and into the lobby and see JW... checking in!
- I saw WAY too much of John this weekend, between him being shirtless hunched over a chair, pics of brendan preparing him a bubble bath every night, and multiple instances of him dry humping flag sticks and drivers.
- The entertainment at Cypress Creek. People going for wrong flag sticks. The poor promotion girl putting up w us on the par 3 challenge. Gary WINNING the challenge but he was technically on the wrong green. Geoff living up to chandlers picks by walking up to a par 3 with his .. well par 3 driver.
- Geoff celebrating his 21st birthday and having the hooters girls sing to him. props to whoever snuck away and told the server.
- The "Chapman Scramble" recap from "the dopes". Each one single handedly blamed another member of their foursome of who was responsible for playing it that way.
- Chandler's called shot on the thirsty fat girls at the table next to us being teachers. it was confirmed.
- Chandlers poor sense of direction. ive never been witness to so many U turns.

Grand Cypress. Glad to be the only winner of all 3 Ryder Cups. When will the captains learn the key to winning is having Dub on the team? I almost went all Harambe on a golf cart after nearly breaking every club in my bag. And I finally learned that Harambe was the name of the gorilla George W Bush had killed at the zoo earlier this year. Where's the love for the alligators in Orlando that just at the snack that Midwestern family left on the shore? Shout out to all the reptiles just doing what they do when parents don't keep track of their toddlers.

Definitely a dictator move to give himself the title of "president", in order to keep up the appearance of democracy.
ReplyDeleteBut you're right, alligators don't get enough credit for all the ecological clean-up work they do. There would be so many more annoying yapping dogs running around without alligators. Darren would probably own 8 more of them.
Speaking of Cypress Creek... they re-open next month. New greens, new tee boxes... took some trees out.

Just a few more winners / losers / observations:
ReplyDeleteWinners = the longer hitters. Much like when we played Champions Gate, I found golf to be much more enjoyable due to the more traditional course layouts. Golf was not originally designed to have trees / hazards / out of bounds lining the left side AND the right side of the fairway with ANOTHER hazard cutting down the middle of the fairway at some point about 230 yards from the tee box where the hole then takes a 50 degree dogleg right (i.e. hole #4 at Pebble Creek). The public course options around Tampa are very limited when it comes to open layouts. Even the Reunion Nicklaus Course felt more open than the majority of the courses we can play around Tampa. The New Course at Grand Cypress was probably the most open layout I have ever played. I think the course layouts provided a larger advantage to the Blue Team than originally anticipated.
Winners: My Snapchat followers - for reasons that do not need to be published online.
Losers: Gorecki's chances and my chances of winning many tournaments in the spring. We have all witnessed the vast improvement in Gorecki's game over the last couple of months. Unfortunately for him, years of horrible golf scores will all be wasted. His improved golf game will cause his handicap to drop over the fall. By the time we get to the spring season, he will have shot too many rounds in the low to mid 90's and his handicap will have adjusted accordingly.
I spent the spring and a large part of the summer in a funk which caused my handicap index to get up to 13.2. I am thankful I seem to have figured out how to hit the ball solid again. However, I think the same fate that awaits Gorecki will get me as well. My handicap should adjust over the off season to a more respectable number. My losing streak in league play may continue for quite some time.
Which brings me to my final group of Losers... Anyone that played me this weekend. If you were on the Orange Team and want an easy way of determining how your follow team member did in any specific round, just ask yourself this question: did they play against Buchert? If they did, then they lost. 3 Wins, 0 Losses, 0 Ties. Suck on that 20+ tournament and counting losing streak. Now if your teammate didn't play me in a specific round, then there is still a good chance that your teammate lost. However, it is not a 100% certainty.
Well... can't argue with any of that! Just need to follow Buchert on Snapchat...
ReplyDeleteWhen America finally started building golf courses, Europeans came over here and lost their mind. They said we were ruining the game with tree-lined fairways.
Augusta National was actually designed to be links golf. And over the years they changed it to more of an American style. Check out this gif of the changes to hole 15.
If the rate isn't too jacked up during the winter months, I'd love to play Grand Cypress when it has a chance to dry out and there is some roll to the course.

Those of us going to Copperhead this weekend estimated our vouchers to be worth about $80. Well the rack rate this weekend is $210. Insane. Just hit it straight, Dan.
