Losing Streaks

Because I'd really like someone to beat my streak of 61 tournaments without a win, and I'm the only one that cares even a little bit about it, I went through and tabulated everyone's current losing streak. The last two weeks have seen the longest active streak end and the second and third longest active streaks end on consecutive weeks. Before they're all gone, I wanted to list them from Gorecki and Dave on down to... (not gonna spoil it)

0 Tournaments without a win:

• Dave - Dave was on a 17 tournament losing streak before tying for first on Sunday. Dave will never go on the losing streak I'm hoping to one day see because he's simply too good at golf. The ability to put up a 75 will always give him an advantage on otherwise difficult courses even with some folks getting 30+ strokes out there.
• Gorecki - Speaking of getting 30+ strokes out there, Gorecki took full advantage of his 31 strokes and tied Dave for the championship on Sunday. After having not won his previous 20 tournaments, including a stretch of golf only superseded in it's awfulness by Big John's bad stretches, he got the monkey off his back at Match Play. We know he can put up low 90's scores (even if some of those in his recorded history are a bit suspect), and when you can do that and have a handicap that high, he's due to win occasionally.

1 Tournament without a win:

• Tall Mike - It was my great hope that Moostie would have continued his losing streak and overtaken mine as it was the quickest route, especially given his solid attendance record. Alas, it ended, presumably because of the great haircut he got that Saturday.
• Much Smaller John - The weight loss didn't seem to be helping his swing and there seemed a good chance that he wouldn't win until his handicap got into the mid-20's. He'd have a Friday round that would give him hope, just to see his game plunge into double-pitcher territory on Sunday. At a major of all places he pieced it together and the only reliable part of his game pulled him through to a win. Unlikely we see a stretch that lasts with Big John.

2 Tournaments without a win:

• Gary - Gary will never come close to my record. He's in a group that wins far too regularly to not be sandbagging. I'll note those as they come.
• Adam - He hits the ball way better than his handicap, but scores so terribly. It was only a matter of time before he pieced it together enough to win one, and not a surprise he owed a good pitcher because of it.
• Buchert - The baby is going to keep him from playing enough break the record, but his low handicap I thought might have given him an outside chance. That came crumbling down with his stellar performance in this season's Classic. Two second place finishes are making me think that handicap needs to be lowered a bit and we might be seeing some unreported scores.

4 Tournaments without a win:

• Brendan - I didn't have much hope for Brendan to lose long enough due to recent spotty attendance and his proclivity for an amazing round out of nowhere. Anyone who can sandbag enough to set the net scoring record for a tournament won't lose 61 times in a row.
• J.W. - He's the only one who's done it before, and he probably has the best chance to do it again. Inability to close out holes will always do him in. Will have more kids than wins soon, so time on the course will be limited. He'll always have those Hangovers, though.

8 Tournaments without a win:

• Troy - The game didn't return to the league in a stellar way, but he'll be a threat at short courses with his good small ball game. Won't ever be too drunk or hungover, so that's a big advantage on Sunday mornings. This also goes for Adam and a few others.
• Darren - League's premier sandbagger is seemingly always near the top of the leaderboard. Probably on PEDs, too.

9 Tournaments without a win:

• Reid - Reid's like a better Adam. He can have some bad rounds, but won't be as bad as Adam's, but can also break 80. Very doubtful he loses enough for my record, and it's a bit surprising he's never won a season title. Actually, same for Gary there.
• Danny - This seems like a pretty good bet even with the high handicap. If he doesn't quit golf before his next 52 tournaments, we're gonna put him on watch.

12 Tournaments without a win:

• Katie - With the spotty attendance recently, Katie might not even play in enough tournaments moving forward to get to 61. She can also catch fire and shoot a mid-80's round to beat everyone regardless.

14 Tournaments without a win:

• Casey - His Yeti says he's won a DPT Cup before, but his finishes recently haven't said the same thing. It appears his handicap is catching up with him because despite some relatively solid scores for our club, he's not cracking the top 3 very often. Outside chance he can keep up the losing for a long time here unless he gets to sandbagging for a while or has a lights out round.
• Mike H - The rare case of a seemingly reverse sandbagger, we hear a lot about great round of golf from Mike, but don't see them very often in league play. Continuing to report scores in the 70's at Westchase is a beautiful way to continue a losing streak. Thanks, Mike.
• Robbie - When Robbie's Summer of International Travel is over, he'll probably get back to posting low scores. I expect he'll end his losing streak in the Jamaican this season if he shows up, and if not then at some point next spring.

15 Tournaments without a win:

• Faz - This is a lengthy Faz slump, but it's not uncommon if you look at his historical scores. The handicap will inflate to the right amount and then he'll start winning in bulk. Watch out for that happening soon with him being back up to an 11.5.

29 Tournaments without a win (or even a 2nd):

• Geoff - Geoff is one of the worst golfers in the league based on scoring average, so he gets a ton of strokes every round. His handicap has stayed steady around 21-24 the last few years, and he last won on April 30, 2017. Now, to put in perspective what Geoff would have to do to reach the record, he'd have to lose out this season (4 tournaments), and then continue to lose for the next three seasons, and he'd still be one short, assuming perfect attendance. That would be into 2021, and who knows if we'll still have this club by then. I'm going to put a reminder in my calendar for March 28, 2021 so I'll remember to check back and see if Geoff is threatening still. 

In conclusion, this record will never be broken, and most likely Geoff will win at Southern Hills next Sunday and continue the rate at which losing streaks are ending lately: 73 weeks down in the last two tournaments.
