Hangover Invitational - Spring 2020 Recap

Bel Mar Tavern was somewhat hopping, despite global calls for social distancing. One of the bartenders thanked me at the end of the night for bringing out a large group. While everyone should obviously be diligent, it's good to help out some locals pay their bills.

Geoff easily won The Hangover, despite John's best efforts. Drinking all day with some fairies ferries doesn't quite rise to the level of Boozy Geoff. But some borderline homeless guy did appreciate the leftover tequila shots John purchased.

We had such a good time, the next Hangover (and probably the one after that) will be held in South Tampa as well. No need to make the overwhelming majority of participants travel very far.

I guess we also need to talk about the lesser event... golf at Westchase.

Adam's ascent up the World Rankings was quite predictable, it just took longer than we thought. The kid has way too good of a swing (and distance) for him to live down in the Pitcher Zone. His round was basically mistake-free, with only two doubles on the card in back-to-back holes. He rebounded by going +3 (gross) on the final eight holes.

Finishing behind Adam was Troy, who must be playing the best stretch of golf in his life. As I've said before, Westchase is rated too low. So an even par (net) 90 by Troy is quite impressive. His six pars-or-better on the day beat out 9 other players!

Behind Troy we had Chandler (that's me!) who spent the entire day grinding to avoid a pitcher. Sitting +8 (net) through 5 holes, it was a gypsy miracle that he finished only +9.

John's scorecard indicates he was pretty flat all day (only 4 pars), but the quad on 18 really cost him some much coveted DPT Points.

Gary's tournament lasted all of 10 seconds, and he blasted a low 3-wood (which left a trail on the tee box!) 45-degrees right into the woods on the first hole. He made one of four 10s on that hole, and was lucky to earn points.

Geoff came out hot but had the inevitable sobering-up implosion. Look at his stretch from holes 15 through 9 (we started on the back, remember). It's the stuff of nightmares.

Faz had a few bad swings which derailed his round. Good to see a couple of club-tosses out there. I'm a big fan of golfers with passion.

Speaking of, looks like our resident Spaniard — JW — was also done in by a handful of bad holes. Thankfully he did some good hanging out afterward, enjoying his two pitchers.

And that's one of the problems with Westchase. I don't think it's unfair... it's just brutally penal like Bayou Club. Every bad swing will lead to a penalty stroke, if not more. Especially with all the forced approach shots.

It was the best I've ever seen conditions out there... but $63 is pretty much only tolerable because it's the "winter/spring" season. The guy who checked in before me paid $92. GTFO.

We have 7 people very much alive for the Cup, which is a Club record. I'll post some more about that later this week, but the FBGC Masters will be Sunday, 11:15am at Grasslands.

Everyone attending has to pay John, so bring cash ($43) or pay him electronically when you show up.

There are only 16 spots. Danny is out, and Katie hasn't accurately updated her RSVP all season. So if Melberg wants in, let me know and I'll make sure he has a spot. Same goes with Dan.
