Welcome back to everyone's favorite game, FBGC Match Play Picks! Here are the rules of the game: pick the golfer you think will win each match. Assign confidence points (more confidence points, the more likely you think that golfer will win) to each pick. Confidence points available are the whole numbers 1-9. The winners will be all of those people who don't lose. The number of losers will be determined by the numbers of entries, and the losers will be those with the lowest amount of confidence points won. Every foursome of entries will have a loser. If there are 5 entrants, we'd have to go off in two groups, so each group will have a loser in that sense. Each loser will owe a pitcher of beer that can be consumed by only the winners. Post your picks in the comments section before Group 1 tees off on Sunday. Adding funny commentary will make you more respected in the eyes of your peers.
As is tradition, the BGR will make picks based solely on the BGR Power Rankings (which we've discovered are in dire need of updating). These picks represent only the opinions of the BGR Collective from 2018 and not the individual members.
Dub v Geoff (5 strokes): BGR ranking difference: 14
Starting off with a blowout. Does Geoff (not even a real name according to Blogger) even booze on the course still? His best hope is Dub arriving unprepared for the course's probable poor BGR ranking (it's been a long time since we've played Waterlefe). Dub wins by a 6 pack. DUB (8)
Faz v Casey (4 strokes): BGR ranking difference: 11
Expect Faz to walk away with this one while Casey sips tea from the green championship cup he made for himself. I'd hate to see what kind of awful craft gifts he gives his wife after looking at the job he did with his Yeti. FAZ (7)

| Probably what Casey got Mrs. Rease for Christmas last year. |
Brendan v Danny (8 strokes. Only 8?): BGR ranking difference: 6
Our writeup definitely needs to be updated. Brendan now has the premier BGR accessory and there's no way he's losing to Danny on Sunday in match play. Danny had a tough stretch of pretending to catch the Rona, then celebrating not catching the Rona, and maybe then catching the Rona during his celebration. That indecision goes straight into the golf game, and not only will he hold up the course while deciding between Coors Light and Miller Lite, he's gonna put more shots into a hazard than Big John at the Philadelphia airport. Brendan wins going away. BRENDAN (6)
Gary (5 strokes) v Chandler: BGR ranking difference: 3
Gary is getting as many strokes as beers they'll probably combine to drink on the day. Weak booze golf matchup here, but they can't all be roses, I guess. Chandler will win with gypsy magic and probably kick Gary's ball in the water while his dad isn't watching. Not that he'd be able to see it happen anyway. CHANDLER (3)
Melberg v Adam (7 strokes, that's a lot): BGR ranking difference: N/A (just like Adam's beer)
In this battle of two unranked club members, the BGR has to respectfully go with the competitor that actually drinks alcohol. Sorry, Adam. Melberg wins late. MELBERG (1)
Katie (9 strokes) v Dave: BGR ranking difference: 6
Look for Katie to beat Dave and bounce back from a last place finish last week. Not going to say anything else about Katie because she apparently is very sensitive to internet "trolls" these days. Also not making tree jokes anymore because we need something new about Dave. Making fun of the way people talk has lost its luster. KATIE (5)
Darren v Reid: BGR ranking difference: 15
Holy crap is Darren overrated in the most recent power rankings. Dude can't walk down the street without breaking a bone and being out for four months, and we expect him to be able to have alcohol, swing a club, and not accidentally kill someone? Still, I guess we have to go with Darren to win this match against Reid, and with the most confidence points. Wish we'd have looked at these rankings earlier. DARREN (9)
Gorecki (8 strokes) v Tall Mike: BGR ranking difference: 4
Slow and steady has won the Club Championship 3 times, while slow and clanky is trying to parlay an early season win into the destruction of the Champions Dinner. These two are respected in booze golf circles for their preparedness and general joviality with the nectar of the gods. The round might take 6 hours, but it will be intriguing to see which one boozes the best to help their game. Expect Moostie to pull out a win in the end, though. MOOSTIE (4)
Ho v Troy (8 strokes): BGR ranking difference: N/A
Troy was on his extended vacation to Texas when the BGR last ranked our club members, so we have some liberty to do what we want here. While the golfer side of us kind of wants to take Troy and the 8 strokes, the BGR side insists we have to be honorable in our assessments. Ho wins from the forward tees after he and Troy decide to bail on the other Mikes after the 7th hole. HO (2)

As much as I want to release some GorecHate on most of you people, I'll only tease you all this week with some limited commentary. So consider this the foreplay before the fisting commences for The Memorial (RIP)...
ReplyDeleteGeoff over Dub (5)- This is the premier "A" pairing given group of death Mike's were booted to the back? It would be more entertaining to have them debate which one's first name is more unique than follow this match.
Faz over Casey (7)- Faz started a new life by moving to St Pete. He also must have no life since he's the only member to have attended 18 consecutive FBG events according to World Golf Rankings.
Brendan over Danny (9)- Danny might have recovered from the Covid, but this course is gonna be like that Hillsborough County brain Amoeba and eat him alive.
Gary over Chandler (2)- 2nd lowest league handicapper better borrow one of Katie's skirts if he really is going to play from the forward tees.
Melberg over Adam (4)- Can't follow this match on Golf GameBook in fear that Adam is recording a lower score again.
Dave over Katie (8)- If Katie is overly sensitive to other people's comments I'll just copy and paste her own words after learning the board exempted her suspension prior to the season starting.. "Yay!!!!!!!!!! I’m gonna win the next season! Champ again! Yahoo!"
Reid over Darren (1)- Guess we need Reid to win the tournament and/or make picks and lose so we can actually see him in the clubhouse.
Polack over Dutchman (3)- If people from Poland are called Poles, why aren't people from Holland called Holes? (Insert mind blown emoji)
Ho over Troy (6)- I wish Troy's game would return to earlier form. Although I am presenting him his way overdue MEMORIAL trophy on Sunday, but unfort it'll take more than this elite piece of hardware to be his can of spinach.
Geoff (9) Dub wasted all his good shots last week.
ReplyDeleteFaz (1) Casey wasted all his good shots in 1991.
Brendan (7) Danny doesn't have any good shots.
Chandler (8) Gary can't see his shots.
Adam (3) Who the fuck is Melberg?
Dave (6) Katie thinks Sublime is too edgy to be listened to while she swings a golf club, so basically she's a head-case.
Reid (4) Darren's body is barely held together. He's like a patchwork quilt that magically cures aids or soemthing.
Tall Mike (5) Someone tall and named Mike will win the other will play slow golf. Total coin-flip here.
Troy (2) Ho's best golf is heard, not seen.
Pretty sure I used up all my jokes in the first writeup, so these will be very boring.
ReplyDeleteDub over Geoff (3) - At least I made it through 18 with some good shots. Or maybe 100 yard wedges are just too tough for Geoff to execute even when his game is on? At least he won't have many carries over water to worry about on Sunday, oh wait... Either way, one of us has momentum coming off the last round. The other is writing big checks that his game can't cash to boost his confidence while licking his second place wounds. Neither of us have a great history here with Geoff's win coming back when a single foursome was all Chandler needed to book. Could be a match to see who can avoid triples the best.
Faz over Casey (4) - Casey won last time we played out at Waterlefe, but he was getting a ton of strokes back then. Faz's more consistent game will eke out a win. Neither of these guys are getting enough strokes to compete for the win, though. Faz's 87 at Grasslands had him in 17th place. This might be a sell scenario for the season championship.
Brendan over Danny (9) - This course does not set up well for Danny's game. I believe the only course that might set up well for his game is the Wii Golf easy course, and even that might be challenging.
Chandler over Gary (6) - Gary moves his shots too much to trust with water hazards everywhere. Chandler is playing a practice round on Friday, too, and you know he's gonna sprinkle some extra gypsy dust on the banks by the left side of the fairways to make sure Gary's ball bounces on into the water.
Adam over Melberg (2) - I've played against Melberg with money on the line, and it didn't end well for him.
Dave over Katie (8) - I didn't see Katie's birdie putts last week, but judging by the scorecard there weren't nearly enough of them. Reports from that group give me little faith that she'll keep it together against Dave and his repertoire of White Claws and Trulys.
Reid over Darren (7) - I think this course suits Reid's eye better than anyone else's except maybe Chandler. That and Darren having to pull his mask up and down to smoke cigarettes will wear him our and Reid will pull away in the end.
Moostie over Gorecki (1) - Two classic blunders: getting involved in a land war in Asia and picking Moostie in match play with his worst in the club .219 win rate. I'm gonna go against the latter of those, though, because Gorecki has been truly awful at Waterlefe with the infamous withdrawal and some 120 action in there not even sniffing breaking 100.
Ho over Troy (5) - I kind of think Ho is going to win this week after moving up to the forward tees. He'll get to the wedges more often and could set up well for Waterlefe with the easier swings keeping his fades from running too far. A lot of forced carries for Troy to deal with and the walking game will be slowed down with all the bridges, too.
Here are the official State Sponsored Media picks:
ReplyDelete9 - Dave over Katie
Dave doesn't play very well at The Leaf, but Katie might have been premature in proclaiming she's "back." If Dave really wants to win, he just needs to play 90's rock throughout the day, which she apparently can't stand. Sublime, Everclear, Gin Blossoms, Goo Goo Dolls... all that Pre Malone shit. I'm going to risk buying a pitcher and make this my most confident pick, just so I jinx him and Dave loses. Reverse-reverse-reverse hedging. Dave wins 10&8.
8 - Reid over Darren
The Baron's return to golf has been a bit of a letdown. A 7th and two 10th place finishes feels like watching the end of Arnold Palmer's career. And I don't mean missing the cut at the 2004 Bay Hill Invitational Presented by MasterCard. More like, Arnie tripping on carpet and injuring his arm in 2015. Reid hasn't been playing much better, but at least he's had success navigating the canals and marshlands we'll see Sunday. Reid also has a much better Match Play record, so I have to take him straight-up here, 2&1.
7 - Casey over Faz
Tough match-up but I'm giving Casey the nod due to the 5 strokes. Also... he's basically Jeff Sluman. So he has that going for him. Casey wins 4&3, and then tells us in the clubhouse how he once courted Sandra Dee in 1962.
6 - Melberg over Adam
Melberg is going to par this course to death. Seven strokes seems like a lot, especially since Adam is playing well lately. But I'll take the unknown who isn't afraid to hit a driver, and doesn't spray it off the planet. New guy wins 9&2.
5 - Chandler over Gary
Two of the best Match Play records in Club history. But the old man has only broken 90 thrice out of 10 attempts on this course. Gary will enjoy the reminder that his son grew up to be "better" than he was at something. Chandler wins 18UP.
4 - Moostie over Ho-Chunk
There is zero chance Gorecki can win at Waterlefe, even with 8 shots from the ladies tees. His lowest score out there is a 105. The Pool Pump Incident wasn't just part of a 70 hole stretch without a par, but Gorecki didn't even make a BOGEY that day!
Fun tangent... combine those 9-holes without a bogey when Gorecki WD'd, with his scores the end of his previous round and beginning of his next round... and he went 17 straight holes without a bogey or better. Simply amazing.
Anyway, Tall Mike's scores are also complete trash on this course — nothing better than a 101. But his people were once obsessed with tulips. And gardening takes patience. Just like Waterlefe. Moostie wins 46&2.
3 - Dub over Geoff
Match of the week! Really wish I was in this group to watch it. JW's scores at The Leaf are: 113, 106, 107, 99. Improvement! Geoff's scores are: 98, 106, 103, 102, 98, 103, 112, 114. Not improvement! Ugh, totally at a loss on this one. JW desperately needs to get a win due to his constant schedule conflicts (there's never a good weekend with that guy). Geoff has played in 5 of the 6 Club events at Waterlefe. His scores on the FIRST HOLE are: 9, 9, 9, 8, 5. That is horrendous. Give me Dub to win 7UP.
2 - Ho over Troy
Troy played Waterlefe once and shot a 104, which would have been good enough for DFL had Gorecki not trunk-slammed after nine holes due to a Pentair SuperFlow Variable Speed pump ($699.95 on Amazon right now). Troy has officially joined Ho on the WHITE tees, a great move in my opinion. I don't have any records of Ho playing Waterlefe, so this could be a toss-up. Slight edge to Ho who has a somewhat better Match Play record. Ho wins 25 or 6 to 4.
1 - Breandan over Danny
If Danny breaks 100 he'll probably win the damn event. Really not that difficult of a task. But one of the side-effects of Rona is choking under pressure. So Danny must have had it since the mid-80s. Brendan wins the match 18 and Life, becoming the next Member to test positive.
Typically I only make it through 9 holes before I run out of shots, so 17 is a big improvement. Someone is going to have to hold JW accountable... might as well be me.
ReplyDeleteGeoff (1)
ReplyDeleteCasey (2)
Danny (3)
Gary (4)
Adam (5)
Katie (6)
Reid (7)
Gorecki (8)
Troy (9)
JW (6) Geoff - I think JW found something in the last event. I think he knows what it is and brings it with him this week.
ReplyDeleteCasey (1) Faz - Coin Flip. I’m excited I get to watch it.
Brendan (3) Danny - I have a horrible match play record and Danny has been playing some of the best golf I’ve ever seen him play. Still..
Gary (2) Chandler - Just because of the 10 minute ramble I had to read about Gorecki losing to his dad.
Adam (8) Melberg - Adam continues to shoot under par net and with 7 strokes, I can’t see Chris overcoming that.
Dave (9) Katie - I think Katie is due for some better golf but would need more than 10 strokes against Dave.
Reid (5) Darren - I might be wrong but Darren also doesn’t have a good match play history. Reid makes it closer than he should but pulls it off.
Gorecki (4) Tall Mike - Gorecki is winning the season so yeah he wins!
Troy (7) Ho - Too many strokes for Ho to make up. Troy puts him away around hole 15.
Vlad's Picks:
ReplyDeleteJW vs Geoff - JW keeps his hot streak alive with a match win and top 5 finish.
Casey vs Faz - Faz stays dry on 17 and 18 this week to seal the W.
Brendan vs Danny - Brendan bucks history and wins this match.
Gary vs Chandler - "In Soviet Russia, match wins you!" Chandler wins 3 and 2.
***The Moscow Match of the Week*** Adam vs Melberg - Too many strokes for DJ Melle Mel to overcome. Adam vaporizes the competition and leaves the course with two lungs full of sweet, sweet points.
Dave vs Katie - In 2020 you'd hate to see an Irishman beat a woman, but I can't see this match unfolding any other way.
Reid vs Darren - "We're going streaking!" Reid rattles off 5 straight pars on the back 9 to close out Darren in a tight one.
Gorecki vs Tall Mike - Right now the only one who can stop Gorecki is Gorecki or maybe a guy in a Gorecki suit. "Sugar water..." Tall Mike reaches for the stars, but comes up short.
Troy vs Ho - Ho tries to follow in the footsteps of the late great Agamemnon, but this time Troy cannot be defeated. Troy wins 4 and 3.
Faz fed league info into an AI machine and out popped Vlad’s picks.
