In a few minutes, our first ever Board of Directors vote will be live. An email will be sent to the addresses I have on file, for all active members, from a third party website called "BallotBin." You can follow the link to register/vote for up to 4 candidates. Voting will last through next Wednesday (April 4th) at the latest. A few administrative items:
- If you don't get an email, let me know after checking your spam folder.
- I will NOT be able to see results until the poll is closed. I will also NOT be able to see who voted for whom. This is an anonymous vote. I will only be able to see who has failed to submit a ballot.
- You do NOT need to select 4 people. Any ties after the initial vote will result in run-offs.
- Once you have voted, you may NOT change your vote. Be careful with those fat fingers.
- I highly recommend only voting for candidates who will continue the traditions we've set.
- This Board's term ends after the last tournament of the Summer 2019 season, at which point another election will take place. There is no limit on how many terms you may be elected.
- Due to the late start, this Board will only hold one Annual Meeting after the Summer 2018 season. Any potential policy/rule changes will be discussed and voted on at that time.
- All Board activity will be documented and transparently shared with the league.

Courses Tab
Of all the sheets I maintain, the Courses one is the most tedious and frustrating. Scorecard information changes too much, and tracking the things I feel are useful (like cost per round) is a huge pain in the ass over time to get any meaningful data. You also can't sort embedded sheets on the blog.
Long ago I got rid of a course tab that incorporated an interactive Google Map. Today I put back up a summary of every course we've played, sorted by difficulty, which might at least shed some light to the masses about where we schedule events.

Jamaican Open - Spring 2018 Recap
The Creek played as difficult as ever yesterday, beating up the field and resulting in three pitchers. It was only a few strokes away from seven. It was a little disappointing how bad some of the conditions were, especially on the greens. No course in Tampa should be in rough shape this time of year.
But Gary won for the first time in 13 events, thanks to great birdies on 9 and 17, and shooting +1 (gross) on his final five holes. His -5 (net) is the best score ever recorded at PC in league history (5 events).
Chandler was the only other golfer under par (net), which was pretty undeserved. Ho continued a stellar rookie season with a T3 finish, and Darren kept his top 3 streak alive. He's now mathematically eliminated everyone except Big John from The Cup contention. I don't like his chances though, as he's put up some hefty numbers lately despite a win and 2nd place on the season.
Also worth mentioning Katie, who shot her worst ever round in her brief league history, not only in gross score but also differential. When asked to comment on her day, Big John said: "That was the single greatest drunken performance I have ever witnessed in my life." Combine that with Dave's early morning parking lot ritual, apparently The Hangover tournament is more than just once a season.

DPT Championship - Spring 2018 Recap
Beautiful out on the course... the kind of day you should take very... slowly. Some of our members probably still felt the pace was a bit rushed. And some of the louder and more selfish guys predictably complained about, well, everything.
But the course was a fair and stern Major test, and once again Darren found himself in the top three. He destroyed the field, earning his first victory of the season, and all but locked up his second DPT Cup. Only a third of the field is mathematically eliminated, but the rest are on life support.
And while the Cup might be out of reach... World Ranking points still matter for Rapture qualification!
It seems John is slowly putting the wheels back on his game (probably stole the wheels off Chandler's), while Ho had another nice finish in his rookie season. Gorecki putted lights out today to earn his highest point finish in 15 events. The rest of you weren't very good.

Board of Directors - Nominations
Alright, I've put this off long enough. We're going to elect the remaining Board of Directors per our By-Laws, to help run the league and give me people to blame.
Each Board position runs through the end of odd number years... so 2019 with the next election held before the Spring 2020 season.
The main purpose of the Board is to serve as the Handicap Committee, approve new members for league vote, handle membership issues, and debate/vote on any league rule changes during the Annual Meeting each winter off-season.
As Chairman, I expect anyone who nominates themselves to be willing to actively negotiate group rates, learn (in detail) how handicaps work, and to unselfishly consider policies.
Examples of how NOT to govern can be seen in these paraphrased statements said to me over the past 7 years:
"I'm up at 5am every day, so we should play at 8am. Too bad for anyone else who has a social life and doesn't get up early."
"We should only play courses that are $70+. If you can't afford that then you shouldn't be golfing."
"I'm an alcoholic, and everyone should be required to do 30 shots each night like I do. If you can't drink, even for health reasons, then you should be kicked out of the league."
"We should set a minimum handicap requirement, which would kick out Gorecki."
"I don't like this course because I suck at golf and can't hit a 30 yard wide fairway. We should ban it!"
"Mike sounds like a slow player name. Everyone named Mike should be in the last group at all times. Hauch plays really fast but he's just gonna have to be collateral damage. Blame his parents for giving him a slow golfers name."
All those statements above do not adhere to our Club's second purpose in Article 2.
I've attempted to make it difficult for Board members to cause too much damage, but I'm fully aware it's human nature to selfishly fuck up good things if given enough time. Keep this in mind when you eventually vote for league leadership.

USGA Rule Changes - Update
Our friends at the USGA have released updates for the 2019 rule changes. Again... nothing for us changes until after this year. But here's a preview if you didn't take the time reading about it elsewhere:
- Drops can be taken from your knees, instead of shoulders. Fun.
- No penalty for accidentally moving your (or your opponents) ball while searching for it, or on the green.
- You will be allowed to repair spike marks on the green. Which most of you do anyway.
- You no longer need to remove the flagstick from the hole when putting on the green. If you have a severe downhill putt and think leaving it in will help you.... so be it.
- You can now ground your club, make practice swings, and remove loose items around your ball in hazards. This does NOT apply to bunkers, however.
- Opposite Side relief on lateral hazards is no longer allowed. It's that complicated option I've attempted to explain a few times, but never really comes into play.
- If you decide a ball is unplayable in a bunker (buried under a lip, for example), you can drop it OUTSIDE of the bunker as far back as you like for a TWO STROKE penalty.
- There will NOT be a penalty for a double-hit. Which means Gorecki would not have beaten Brendan in the 2015 Rapture!
-Committees (like ours) may now set a max score for stroke play events. Which we already do! Go us!
- A Local Rule may be used, allowing shots OB (or lost) to be dropped in the nearest fairway. This should not be used in high-level competition though. It's still a two stroke penalty... but basically in 2019 provisionals might be a thing of the past with this new change.

Schedule Update
With the help of Gorecki (seriously, he's immensely helpful when he wants to be), we contacted just about every course west of Orlando... and only one had availability for our next event.
We're off at 9:30am on the Legends Course at Orange Lake. $78 after tax.
A few of us have played it a handful of times, but it's been awhile. Hopefully it's in decent shape... but honestly we're going in there blind. I also don't trust the scorecard on their website (linked above), as it doesn't match the USGA ratings which we will use. Every time I've played there has been on the BLUE tees, so that will be the default.

Black - 71.5 / 130
Blue - 69.6 / 128
White - 67.3 / 124
Yellow (F) - 69.8 / 123
It's an Arnold Palmer course, and can play very difficult. Just about every hole on the back nine has a lake guarding the green. Good times. Make sure you've updated your registration.
Katie should be IN giving us 14 of 16. Tall Mike should be able to get back to Tampa in time for his flight.

Next I'll book a couple houses on AirBnB, and after our 3rd round of next season the rankings will be locked. Still hoping we can take 16 people.

Spring 2018 - Match Play Recap
Absolutely beautiful day out on the course. And a brutal one on the scorecard. We had a possible record 6 pitchers purchased, and were only strokes away from 10 of them!
Katie once again stomped the field, with an impressive 93 (gross). She almost had two hole-in-ones, and one of those was on the 164 yard par 3 7th, which she then chipped in from off the green with a putter to card a net 0! And while you might not think 164 yards, uphill, to a back pin is worth mentioning... for her that was a flushed 5-wood. Did you use a 5-wood from our 190 yard tees? No? Relativity matters!
Anyway, last time she played Renaissance she shot 9 strokes worse from 425 yards shorter, so needless to say it's still her world and we're just golfing in it (she will be under a 20 handicap soon).
The Baron is back, as DB notched yet another 2nd place finish. He now has a commanding lead despite zero victories. It's insane that he made nine pars on the day and still lost by two strokes.
The rest of you sucked, with +2 (net) earning solo 3rd.

Lots of grumblings in the clubhouse after the round. The course is difficult, but you shouldn't be afraid of it. It's not unfair by any means (outside of the 10th hole), and the greens/fairways are firm and fast which is very rare in our area. Renaissance is the 15th most difficult course in our history, and only the 8th most difficult of those courses we've played more than once. It shouldn't be a staple, but at $40 it should definitely not be banned (ie: Hernando Oaks, Plantation Palms). Plus the old ladies running the place love us.
Next time we go down there I'll get us on Scepter, which is vastly easier and more forgiving.

Dave finished 8 spots below MikeHo (9 net strokes) and yet completely destroyed him 5&4 in the Match Play. Mind boggling.
John probably isn't walking straight after the 8&9 ass whipping Darren gave him. And that was only the third worst beat down in league Match Play history!
Katie and Buchert both won their matches despite making double par on the first hole. Yes, no range sucks.
Tall Mike and Reid still need to learn how to use a cart properly (Mike was driving). Drop people off... go to your ball... let them walk to you or go pick them up when you're done.

Valspar - Thursday
Tiger Woods committed to playing the Valspar next week, for the first time in his career. A bunch of us already had tickets for Thursday... but Dave has one (1) extra.
It's Hooters Owl Nest, all you can drink beer and a handful of shitty wings. If you're interested in joining us, make a comment. You'll owe Dave $75.

Despite Gorecki "claiming" the Thursday Hooters ticket, he has refused to pay his entry fee from TWO WEEKS ago, even though he's had the cash in hand. Once again, I'm stuck in a position where I need to teach him how debt works. You can't pass it on to someone else. You can't make your problems other people's problems.
Gorecki has until 5pm tomorrow (Monday) to settle up his debt. If he fails to do so, then the ticket will be available to whoever wants it ($75). I know Dan and Tall Mike were interested. Dan told me he was interested first.

Great question. Dave is owed $75 for a ticket, which is in my name, and in my possession. If Gorecki pays Dave, he's actually doing me a favor. In that case, I would still sell the ticket to someone else, and would then owe Gorecki the $75 minus the $10 he owes the league ($65 net). Selling it to someone else would obviously cover this cost. Eventually The Board could invoke Article III, Section 9. Stay tuned!

Great question. Dave is owed $75 for a ticket, which is in my name, and in my possession. If Gorecki pays Dave, he's actually doing me a favor. In that case, I would still sell the ticket to someone else, and would then owe Gorecki the $75 minus the $10 he owes the league ($65 net). Selling it to someone else would obviously cover this cost. Eventually The Board could invoke Article III, Section 9. Stay tuned!

The Streak
Today marks the anniversary of the most rare and momentous occasion in league history: my only league win. It was a gorgeous March morning full of Texas-country music, Bud Heavies, and a glorious cart fanny pack cooler.
Faz and Brendan were witnesses to the glory of my dominating back 9 at the storied Quail Hollow golf course. Will we ever see such a seminal moment in league history again? It's been 4 years and 72 tournaments since it happened, and the league has only added more competition. If you were there that day, tell the story of the event more beautiful and fleeting than the shootingest star in the sky to your children and grandchildren. Sing the songs of the legend of Dub's win and give thanks for living in such a wonderful time.

Match Play - Scorecard and Matches
Lots of tee options at Club Renaissance. Everyone is on BLUE (Katie GREEN) unless you tell me otherwise. While Match Play can earn you an extra 100 points (50 for a tie), money and regular points are still paid out to the Stroke Play event.

Spring 2018 - Hangover Invitational Recap
Another successful Hangover Casual Night Out Invitational, fulfilling part of our USGA requirement for club activity. While the debate continues as to what the event represents, the truth is over half the league showed up, and we had a good time. Mission accomplished, and we're all better off for it as a club.
In the tournament, Robbie and Ho played excellent golf, and BOTH made tricky downhill putts to save par on the final hole and tie for the victory (-4 net). Mike was also aided by an eagle on the 11th, only the 7th eagle recorded in league history. Always good to get a win under your belt in your first season.
There was a complete train-wreck behind them, with six people tying for third place at -1 (net). The course is quite difficult with a potential blow-up on every hole, so it's very impressive for most of the field to finish under par net.
Speaking of train-wrecks, this week's Group of Shame consisted of Dave, Gary, Moostie and Reid... who played in about 4.5 hours despite having a 3+ hole gap between them and our first group. They also couldn't agree on what Moostie got on the 3rd hole, probably because so much time had passed between then and the end of their round. Be sure to keep up with the group in front of you!
Faz and I might need to make some very passive-aggressive videos on "How to Play Ready Golf." One way or another, we'll get you people to stop playing with your cell phones, scorecards and range finders when you should be out of the cart ready to hit. Stay tuned...

This might be the tightest standings ever 4 weeks into a season, with Darren leading despite having zero victories. All 18 members have a legit chance to win the Cup, especially with 600 possible points in Match Play.
As of now, everyone is scheduled to be in this weekend, and we have a lot of intriguing match-ups. However, Faz and JW are threatening to bail... so the entire field might be reshuffled and there will be a couple of 3-ball matches. If both bail... then we'll probably roll with 16 league members and need to boot everyone else. Hopefully that doesn't happen, but Match Play obviously has weird grouping restrictions.
In any case, we're at Club Renaissance in Sun City Center, 9:30am, $40. I'll post more info and scorecard later this week, along with official match-ups and handicaps once I hear from the maybes.
