Buchert got a LONG overdue victory yesterday, with an excellent 75 (gross) on a course that plays much harder than the 108 slope suggests. While the conditions were better than expected, some of those pin placements were nasty. Buchert's win was his first in 26 attempts, snapping one of the longest streaks in the league. Let's check in on the current standings of events since last victory (if any).

JW and Reid were in the mix yesterday, but Dub fell apart in the middle of the back nine, and Reid ejected early to make catching Buchert impossible. Hopefully they can break their streaks soon.
Big John played great yesterday, and would have won almost any other week. It's impressive how far his game has improved over a short period of time, thanks to some lessons and lots of practice. Just last December he couldn't hit his driver more than 120 yards. He was crushing it yesterday.

Lots of great commentary on the Hangover event itself. It's one of our original tournaments, and definitely intended to be a season party. But under the original rules, we had SEVEN members who would have been DQd yesterday. So while I don't want to force people to hang out, it isn't really working. As Faz stated on Saturday, "either we have the event as intended, or we just scrap it."
He also made the point that people miss regular events all the time for various things. And even with a nine week season, it's not detrimental to your standings. Five of the nine champions did NOT play in every event the season they won.
So we're reverting to mandatory attendance. Just consider it a 1.5 day event. No exemptions, if you can't make the night before, then you can still play golf but not for points or money. We do a good job bouncing around to different locations, so sometimes you're going to have a $25 Uber ride like I did Saturday.
We're changing the required time to 8pm-Midnight, so that should help some of you older people. If you don't/can't drink, just come hang out. If the doctor or judge says you're not allowed to be around alcohol, then we'll probably give you a pass. But we're a small enough group to make this work.

John has booked us this week on Saddlebrook (Palmer). It's a course I've never played, but allegedly one of the best in the area. We have 5 tee times starting at 9:06, cost is $50 plus $5 if you want to use the practice facility. I may go play it Saturday at noon for the same price if anyone wants to join.

Who's NOT coming that's playing in the event?
Geoff has to watch the kids so he'll make it over late and do some catch-up. JW might make it over. Reid is out (not sure about golf... he seems confused). Anyone else? Most people coming over at 7pm for dinner first?
In two days we'll be sitting at a crowded bar that has zero parking, paying full price for food and drinks despite being "friends" with the owner, and will probably be asked to leave before 1am. Get excited people!

JW Hangover Preview
Rogers Park. This is what happens when you people appease Gorecki. First he gets his way on Rule 3.1, which ironically DQ's his dad for the season. Then he gets his way on picking the Hangover bar. And now we're forced to play a course of his suggestion because he whined so much about hosting his tournament at Countryway.
Good rule of thumb: when Gorecki opens his mouth to speak, just say "no."
Dave is probably one victory away from an insurmountable lead. Catching him seems about as difficult as putting a man on the moon. But our great country has done so six different times: Apollo 11, 12, 14, 15, 16 and 17 (don't worry about what happened on 13). So who will step up and rip the championship away from his cold, Earthly hands?!?
Prediction
Katie is going to win again this week. Her handicap is still pretty high and the course isn't filled with penalty strokes. If she plays smart, bogey golf... nobody else stands a chance. Geoff finishes 2nd with a round in the low 90s. Faz and Chandler battle it out for DFL and both buy pitchers.

After much discussion and complaints in previous seasons that the Hangover bar should not be mandatory, now some of you people are pretending that you didn't take that stance and want it to be mandatory again. I'm not falling for it. Show up this Saturday night atOdessa Tampa Bay Brewing Company, and immerse yourself in the world of aging housewives. Speaking of, bring your WAGs.
And don't do so because it's mandatory... do so because we're a fun group of people and it's nice to go out and be social twice a year. We have too many people to force attendance, but we don't have too many to socially shame those who bitch out.

While I don't have a problem bumping up the field to 16 people... we're still going to go through the qualifying process. There's plenty of time for someone to back out or Faz to get back in (hopefully he does). Rankings will LOCK after Week 3 of next season. So keep an eye on where you stand and keep that weekend open. Remember, we're playing FRIDAY through SUNDAY, August 18-20.

Gorecki Memorial Recap / JW Hangover Update
Gorecki Memorial Recap
Well a league record in overall attendance and tying record of league member participation was witnessed on Sunday. So was it the course selection that drew such a high turnout or the excitement/desire to become a Gorecki Memorial Champion? Hmm
The morning started out with a surprise unveiling of a tournament champion trophy along with introductions of each player at the first tee including references of those past champions.
For a course that everyone associates with being "too easy". Stats (credit Chan and Faz) prove otherwise:
- Of the 16 league participants, only 4 members finished the day scoring under par (net).
- There were more double pars scored (18) than birdies (12) on Sunday.
- Hole #14 is the 4th hardest Par 4 played among all of the league courses we've visited*. Only a single birdie (Faz) and two pars (Dave & Chandler) were recorded by the entire group on Sunday.

- Only one league member entered the pitcher zone. No additional commentary needed.
Other highlights include:
- Everyone but one non league member made it across the pond on the 97 yard Hole #1 and others (Reid) made sure their ball cleared the hazard (and the green and the adjacent fairway).
- Our first league hole-in-one was (thought to have been) witnessed on Hole 16 lasered at 87 yards by Dictator Chandler Brown. Peasant Mike Gorecki screamed in jubilation and as the two celebrated, outsider Brian Litman (while on his cell phone off the tee box) looked at us confused on why we were so excited. Only by Litman's angle could you see the ball settled directly behind the flag stick. Gary almost received a new nickname of Nostradamus Reincarnate as he made the the prophecy of an ace possibly happening on this day.
- Speaking of prophecy's. Chandler had the inclination to pre-post a rule about OB on hole #13. I know of at least one league member whose ball entered this OB territory and with the rule modification saved him from recording a double par. Sooo thanks I guess?
- For the first time in Gorecki Memorial history, there was a tie for First Place between Troy "I tweaked my swing" and Dave "I wear denim to golf" at -3. The two were both so anxious to take home the Championship Trophy it was settled that Troy will enjoy it now through Master's Sunday (4/9) and Dave will inherit the hardware from then until the next Gorecki Memorial event (mostly likely scheduled for 6/4)
So congrats to the new champions who get to add their name to the record books of this always eventful and "memorial" event....

This week's tournament stop finds us at the JW Hangover Invitational. Westchaser's rejoice as the league has picked Tampa Bay Brewing Company in your neighborhood! Well sort of as even though this establishment claims a westchase (tampa?) address, they're across the street from the OLDSMAR flea market. We have a large elevated table reserved in the main bar area starting at 7pm so those that want to come for dinner can arrive then. FYI there's also an outdoor beer fest happening that evening on their property so they'll probably be directing you where to park but head in to the restaurant NOT the fest.
Then on Sunday we have 4ea foursome tee times set for Rogers Park starting at 9:30 am. Rate is $34pp and they're offering a discount rate for range balls for $2.50 for those looking to to work off that hangover. The course is pretty much wide open and forgiving and with a slope of 108 this will be the "easiest" course the league has ever played. That should help balance out the gauntlet of tougher courses we've played earlier this season.

Gorecki Memorial Preview / Rapture Dates / Hangover Bar
Back to Countryway! 9am on Sunday, and there's no range. That doesn't mean show up at 8:50am. I still need to collect money and whatnot. I'm told the fairways and greens are decent... while the rough still looks like Afghanistan.
$10 entry this week. But bring a little extra cash. There are 11 par 3s so the greenie count will be high.
Local rule this week: On the left side of hole 13 is OB stakes, which exist so you don't hit drives on to the 14th tee box. Ignore those stakes. If you lose a ball over there, it probably went into the lake, take 2 club lengths and a one stroke penalty. ALL OTHER OB STAKES AND ROADS SHOULD BE PLAYED AS OB. Just not the ones to the left of 13.
Prediction: Buchert wins this week. Chandler (hey, that's me!) finishes dead last. Five pitchers bought!

I try to adhere to an unspoken rule where we don't put more than one guest per foursome. The more league members in the group, the more the integrity of scoring is upheld. We have allowed it a couple of times... and this week might be one of them. I booked an extra group, and Litman wanted to challenge Gorecki for $10 (as previous discussed). Well now Gorecki wants to bring his buddy Perillo, aka: the worst golfer in league history. So we either need to kill the Litman bet, or someone needs to jump on the grenade and play with the Special Olympic group.
I'll jump on the grenade, because that's what strong leaders do.
If anyone objects with me babysitting, then I'll put the groups back to normal, pairing Gorecki/Perillo with Brendan and Faz.

Just about all currently qualified members have responded to The Rapture dates. Troy, Casey, Anthony and Dan still need to do so... if we're going to possibly bring 16 people.
However, based on the grid, I contacted Black Diamond about the first three weekends of August. The pro is willing to take our group, but said the Quarry Course is being aerified July 31st, and will be closed for other maintenance that following weekend. So we can either play on greens that are 14 days recovered, or 21 days recovered.
Combine that with the fact that almost everyone is available the weekend of 8/18... and we have our official date. Put it on your calendars now and don't book anything. You'll also need to take that Friday off. While the qualifications won't be locked until after Week 3 of next season... I'm still going to need to book two more courses AND find us housing well before we know WHO is going. The more you people stay engaged, the easier it is to make those decisions.

DPT Rapture Dates
We need to nail down an official date for this year's Ryder Cup Rapture. Here's how the qualifying will work:
- Top 12 people based on Official Golf Rankings, after Week 3 of the Summer season, are selected.
- If we actually have 16 people available for the the weekend we choose, we will take up to that number. I don't think this will happen. And I also don't think we'll EVER take more than 16 people.
- This year we're playing three days, starting on Friday. You'll need to get that day off from work.
- The weekend we choose will be based on the MOST currently ranked player's availability. However, I want EVERYONE to respond. I'll be keeping a chart, probably on this post, and bumping it up to remind you to respond.
- This is something you should be planning around, so if you currently don't have events on the calendar these dates, you should assume you're good to go. We have to plan this far in advance so I can talk to courses and find out their maintenance schedule.
Got it? Comment on this post if you're IN or OUT the following weekends:
*First weekend of September is Labor Day weekend. Tell me if you're going to be around, but this might cause some scheduling conflicts with courses in general, as well as affect our ability to get group discounts and home rentals.
Anything later in the year conflicts with football. We should be able to make one of the above 6 weekends work. Get on it!

Gorecki Memorial - Course Update
Gorecki, bless his heart, attempted to book us at Mangrove Bay next weekend. Unfortunately they were closed to the public for a tournament. He then took it upon himself to call Buffalo Creek... and much to Geoff's & John's delight... they were also closed for a tournament.
At this point he contacts me and says his dad would look into his home course, Tatum Ridge... in Sarasota.
Being your fearless leader, I completely squashed that plan and have booked us at Countryway, a course specifically designed for the event. We tee of at 9:00am on February 5th, at a discounted rate of $24.
Mike was pretty unhappy about a few things: One; I wasn't willing to make the entire league drive an hour-plus to play a course from the old man tees (5,494 yards). Two; I told him his dad wasn't in for points or money this season due to Rule 3.1 (a rule Gorecki pushed for). Three; it's apparently very upsetting when he doesn't get his way, regardless of how it affects the league.
This is another reminder that everyone needs to constantly give feedback. Player feedback is the reason why Rule 3.1 was implemented, in an effort to maintain the integrity of competition. The final tournament of the year has always used an even more strict version of this rule, because people who don't play regularly shouldn't steal potential points from those who do.
And if I'm not constantly reminded of member preferences, you may find yourself driving an hour and 20 minutes to play a course of which Gorecki literally texted: "The league is not gonna let me live this down when we play there." So him knowing it would upset the league still didn't stop him from demanding it. Let that last sentence sink in.
So we have 20 spots currently booked for Countryway. Guests are welcome on a first come, first served basis. Keep your availability up-to-date using the registration link. And openly speak out when you have something to say. Telling me directly doesn't help.
Remember: Moses is watching.

DPT Open - Spring 2017 Recap
The meteorologists couldn't have been more wrong on the rain... but they were pretty accurate about the wind. The entire round saw 20mph winds with gusts up to 30mph. And that makes Southern Hills more of a grind than usual.
Unless you're from across the pond. Then it's apparently a splendid jaunt through a park.
Dave proved that low handicaps can win, shooting gross 75 and carding four birdies. He barely edged out Darren who was impressive with the second lowest gross round of the day (86). The rest of us weren't all that impressive, but Buchert did make an eagle on 16.
At least we got the round in, and the season can continue as scheduled. Which means we're OFF this weekend for Gasparilla. Enjoy the break and don't go to the hospital (or jail).

Sunday Weather
It's not looking good on Sunday, but I haven't cancelled the event yet.
Weather is hard to predict, and if the front slows down over the next 24 hours, then the forecast could shift to hitting us Sunday night instead of Sunday mid-morning. The 2nd time, I was winning my first Major after the turn before the rain hit... which upset you people and you made me cancel the event and re-play it. One season we were able to change venues the morning of the event, driving down to Bradenton where it was dry. That won't be an option this week since everywhere is going to get hit by the front.
Continue to check this blog over the next day and a half. I'll also try to text as many people as possible if/when the event gets cancelled. If that happens, we'll move the Major to the first make-up slot and finish the season with back-to-back Majors (as we did Summer 2013).

Summer 2017 Schedule / Rapture Schedule
Tall Mike is getting a head start planning his family vacation this year, and wanted to work around our summer schedule. I like the dedication, so below are the dates we will play. Please note, the league will take a two week break while the Scotland group is overseas. Normally personal trips like this wouldn't affect the schedule, but eight members are attending which is half the normal field. So use the off weeks to your advantage and take your woman out somewhere nice.
April 30th - Week 1
May 7th - Week 2
May 14th - Bye Week (Mother's Day)
May 21st - Week 3
May 28th - Bye Week (Memorial Day)
June 4th - Week 4
June 11th - Bye Week (Scotland Group)
June 18th - Bye Week (Scotland Group)

July 2nd - Bye Week (4th of July Weekend)
July 9th - Week 6
July 16th - Week 7
July 23rd - Week 8
July 30th - Week 9
No need to tell me availability yet. You will register using the new procedure once the Spring season is over.

As for The Rapture, rankings will LOCK after the first Major (May 21st) of the Summer season. Not counting Labor Day and assuming no rainouts, we have 5 weekends to get it in before football starts: all 4 weekends in August and the weekend of September 9th.
The event will be 3-days this year, requiring you to take off Friday. So start looking at your schedule in August/September. I'll soon officially ask for availability, and will craft a grid to help us pick a date. The weekend that most top ranked players can attend will be the one we choose. If you're the only person who can't make a weekend, chances are God and Moses are mad at you, and you should probably skip the tournament anyway. Stay tuned!

Reid's Reads - Gorecki's Swing
Reid spent the last few days breaking down Gorecki's newly rebuilt swing. Listen to his expert analysis below:
DPT Open - Spring 2017 Preview
The first Major of the year! Nicer course, more money and points to the top finishers.
For the new people: entry fee is $20 this week instead of $10. Greens fees are $45 plus tax, which is literally the best deal in town.
Once again we're hosting the tournament at Southern Hills. Last year they closed for the summer to install new grass on the greens. They are now capable of "championship speed," which is needed since they host Web.com and Valspar qualifiers. I was hoping they would also got rid of the Pete Dye signature undulations that give golfers aneurysms while putting. That did not happen. In fact, since the greens run faster now, the "problem" is worse.
Nothing else about the course changed. It's still very open off the tee, and yet every hole has the ability to destroy your round.
We tee off at 10:40am, so get there an hour early and use their practice facility. Faz will probably arrive at daybreak to get a few hours on the chipping green.
Projections:
Three pitchers this week. High handicappers play well here, so the winner will be.... Gary! That's right, his handicap (16) is way too high. It's his home course and he's hitting the ball great lately. If his short game doesn't implode, he'll easily shoot around 82, giving him a net -6.

Geoff Skins Game - Spring 2017 Recap
Some surprising results coming out of Cheval yesterday. First off, I guess all apps still have the course as a par 72. So adding an extra stroke to everyone, we had 4 pitchers purchased. But three guys broke par (net)!
Gary was lights out on the more difficult back nine, shooting even par on the final seven holes. Despite making triple bogey on the easy 1st hole, he grabbed his first victory since Lansbrook last season.
Reid almost got into the winner's circle with an impressive -3 (net). He had nothing but pars and bogeys on the front, and also played extremely well on the final stretch. It's been 20 events since Reid's last top-2 finish! Long overdue!
And everyone should be worried about Tall Mike. He dominated the league for the entire 2016 calendar year, and finished solo 3rd thanks to birdies on 16 and 17.
Reid and Tall Mike were apparently motivated by the desire to move up from the Gorecki Group... tired of hearing Gorecki constantly talk about Katie's score and handicap. After listening to endless comments about: "how is she in the lead after making two double pars?!?!"... they quickly pointed out: "now you know how the entire league feels about you!" Good stuff!
Speaking of Katie, last week's champ was on her way to back to back dubs... but the wheels on her Magical Mystery Tour bus fell off. Reid is going to analyze her game in his upcoming golf improvement show called "Reid's Reads," but his initial expert opinion was that she hit it too many times. At least one person who followed the round live on this blog agrees:
A few people asked me if Dan is OK. There might be a rash we can't see... but physically he seemed fine. The course is just difficult, and got the best of him for a stretch of holes. I estimate he easily lost 10 strokes by not having seen the course before.

This week we play on Sunday, January 22nd at Southern Hills. Tee time is 10:40am, giving you plenty of time to get up there and check in. Don't be late! We currently do NOT have any open spots, since Troy is going to bring a friend of his.
For any of the new people, Southern Hills is Gary's club, and probably the best course we play all year. It's wide open off the tee, and high handicaps tend to win there because of it. They put in new greens last year, and it's now even MORE difficult to putt. Expect a ton of 3 putts during your round. Their practice facility is excellent and free, so get there with plenty of time to take advantage of it.
No hats in the clubhouse, and you have to tuck in your shirt at all times. Rules is rules. See you up there!

Geoff Skins Game - Spring 2017 Preview
We included a Skins Game into our league to give the schedule some variety. But it's funny how many people "don't like it," mainly due to the payouts having nothing to do with winning. I kinda like the change of pace, however. Getting my money back for a birdie softens the blow of me finishing last.
Once again we'll divide up into two tiers based on handicap. For the Skins portion only, you'll get 80% of your cap, stroking off the low-man in your tier.
As a reminder... ALL tournaments have a summary and scorecard page. If you ever want to preview a scorecard or look up old results, they're easy to find.
Everyone still gets full handicap for the stroke play portion. And those coveted DPT Points will be awarded based on that. So basically... don't even think about the Skins Game until we get into the clubhouse.

Cheval is a lot like Westchase. It'll beat you up if you're spraying the ball. So I expect at least 4 pitchers bought, probably more. Darren putts better this week and beats Katie by a stroke. The entire last group fails to finish their 7-hour round due to darkness.
At least the weather will be great. 11:45am tee time, so get there in time to hit some free range balls and pay up!
